Education
is the key to unlocking ignorance. Educating drivers saves lives
because real information is being put in the hands of people actively
involved in the driving community. The best way to reduce death
related driving incidents is removing distracted drivers. Cars
compatible with cellphones that eliminate hand held needs, do not
disturb text sent while drivers are behind the wheel, and shut down
of cellular abilities while the car is in motion all would
drastically reduce deaths.
When I was in high school a
friend was driving recklessly; he was driving in a neighborhood with
his friends following him. He decided to floor it while looking
backwards. His body was ejected from the car when he slammed against
a brick mailbox. Because he was not wearing a seatbelt, there was
nothing holding him safely in the car. He died a few blocks from his
house in the audience of his friends. He was young and just trying to
have a little bit of fun when it all changed. Momentary decisions
could have saved him. His name was Brandon.
Things
that I can do to be a safe driver is open up a real discussion about
the real dangers of driving distracted. Talking about my own
experience, as well as finding out about others. Knowledge opens
doors! People don’t think they are going to die, so actively
talking about dangerous possibilities and real statistics might spark
real acknowledgment.
