In
the Driver’s Seat

Hurdling
down the road, nothing but blurs of green and red lights flashing
through my brain. My heartbeat works its way into the neck, pulsing
fast and hard. Swift movements are made to avoid the physical contact
of two cars. Music blaring in the background. Becoming numb and deaf
with fear my ears begin to ring. It finally ceases when the
comforting sirens and lights turn on behind the car. Safe, finally
safe.

This
was an event that showed how someone’s lack of drivers ed
and irresponsibility in considering the importance of people’s
lives in the car. Events like this and worse ones can all be
prevented through proper and thorough education and training. In
order to reduce the number of deaths when driving, first we must go
to the roots of driving. Making sure that kids learning how to drive
are receiving a well-informed driving classes and making smart
decisions before they start driving and when they start driving on
their own. It is crucial that they get an education in which they are
informed about the general rules of the road, how to drive safely in
altered weather conditions, and instruction on what not to do when
operating a vehicle. It is important that before kids get on the road
by themselves that they are educated on all these topics to reduce
the amount of accidents that occur as well as reduce the risk of
being in an accident. Therefore, reducing the number of deaths that
are occurring.

 To
further reduce the number of deaths related to driving, the person
driving must be educated on the rules of the road. That means, making
sure that people stay away from drugs and alcohol when operating a
vehicle, staying off their phones, keeping the music volume down, and
keeping all other distractions like passengers off their minds.
Staying focused while in control of the vehicle is another important
step in keeping the people inside the car safe as well as people
around the car.  There have been times where I have seen my
friends driving irresponsibly. Whether that be driving other people
before their license allows it, driving over the speed limit,
blasting music, or driving erratically, I have experienced it. These
types of driving are due to multiple distractions occurring in the
car at one time, causing the driver to speed due to the loud music
and friends talking over the music.

 All
in all, at one point or another everyone will and can experience
someone driving irresponsibility if the rules and regulations of the
road are not being taken seriously or are not kept in check.
Personally, I can be sure make sure that if I have passengers in my
car, to have them all buckle their seat belts. Going the speed limit,
keeping all distractions to a minimum and following all the rules of
the road to ensure my personal safety and the safety of all other
people and vehicles around me. To become a better driver, I can
practice good driving skills and following all the rules by doing
this I become a safe driver because I will be aware of my
surroundings and the cars around me. To help others to become safer
on the road, I could make sure to remind friends and family members
to go the speed limit and to stay off their phone while driving.
Putting something in their cars to remind them to follow the rules of
the road would be a good way to give them a visual reminder to be
safe and smart when driving. In the end the key to keeping everyone
safe on the road stars with good roots in their driving education and
an ample amount of practice time before they go on the roads by
themselves.
