Driver’s Responsbility
People don’t think a lot when it comes to driving. After all, it’s become a custom for people across the United States. But the reality is that driving is among the most dangerous things a person does. And it happens daily.
Driving consists of moving two-ton objects at high speeds. Put that next to hundreds of other cars on crowded streets, crowded, roads, and crowded highways. The danger is clear. And when unsafe drivers, unaware drivers, drivers who are horseplaying, and drivers who are rushing to get somewhere are factored in the danger increased tenfold.
When it comes to driving, and this is something many don’t think about consciously, but the chances of not reaching your destination or returning from your destination are very high. As you say goodbye to your loved ones, your mom, your dad, your children, your significant other, it may be the last. As you enter your car and take one last breath of the outside air and you shut your door, it may be the last time you get to feel the windy breeze hit your face. Driving is deadly, plain and simple.
That’s why it cannot be stressed enough, how important driving safely is. Because every time someone is behind the wheel, there’s a chance someone loses their life. Whether it’d be the driver, another driver, a pedestrian, someone shopping, or even someone minding their own business in their backyard, everyone is at risk when someone is driving.
Driving is not to be played with. Cars are not toys for people. They’re tools to help us, not destroy us. That’s why I take personal offense when I see unsafe driving, and I’m sad to say that I’ve seen too much of that.
I’ve been fortunate enough to never experience a car accident> However, my family does not share the same luck I do. In fact, all of my immediate family has experienced multiple car accidents. Whether it’d be from a car behind them at a light, at an intersection with an incoming car, a mailbox, or a highway accident, my family has been through many. Luckily, none were fatal. But due to these experiences, it’s made me especially cautious when I’m on the road, and very critical of those I ride with.
To me road safety is of the upmost importance, and that is why I’m so quick to tell off my family members, specifically my sister, when she is reckless driving. I can say for certain that I hate when she drives. She is reckless and disregards potential accidents. Often speeding, passing up other vehicles and doing things that would put anyone’s life at risk. I hate it. It’s to the point that I’ve refused to ride with her when she’s driving. Her complete disregard of road safety absolutely disgusts me. And I hate knowing that there are dozens of drivers just like her on the streets.
Despite all my warnings and pleas to her, they’re all disregarded, and she continues in her ways. What I worry about most is that she may be the reason that a completely innocent person loses their life.
When it comes to drivers like the one I just mentioned, there is not a lot that can be done. They believe they’re rulers of the street, and they follow their own “guidelines.” I believe what would be most effective is the absolute revoking off Driver’s licenses to drivers that act in this manner.
However, I believe there is still hope for the future of driving. I’ve driven a couple times, and I’m still learning to receive my Driver’s License. And every time I drive on the road, I make sure to follow safety protocols and to be aware of what is going on around me. It is my hope that there are more drivers like this.
In addition, I think if the idea of safe driving and the potentially fatal danger of driving is instilled in kids at a young age then they’d be more likely to grow up to be safe drivers. Furthermore, legislation should be passed to provide for stricter guidelines when it comes to receiving a license to drive and punishment for those who commit violations of road law.
Overall, the knowledge and importance of driving safety needs to be recognized by everyone who currently drives and everyone who plans to. Driving is a responsibility, and it should not be taken lightly. Especially when what is at stake is considered: the needless loss of innocent lives.
