Driver’s Ed: The Next Step Forward

In today’s world, the convenience and accessibility that cars offer are closely linked to the duty of maintaining road safety. This startlingly high number of fatalities from traffic accidents highlights how urgent it is to take action to lessen these occurrences. In this endeavor, driver education becomes essential because it not only provides people with the skills they need, but it also instills a sense of awareness and responsibility.

However, most people forget about the seriousness of driving until they hit the road. They take driving lessons with the mindset that they’ll learn, but these lessons are made for passing the driving test. Once people enter the road, they have to learn by intuition and not always keep their habits, because their lessons were not enough. Another reason why driver’s education needs to be taken more seriously is the existence of DUIs, oftentimes due to excessive drinking. Under the influence, the driver risks themselves and the passengers, resulting in many more deaths according to the statistics. Safety is thrown to the window each and every time.

Educated drivers, for example, are more aware of safety and have more sense of responsibility than the average driver. They are more attentive of their surroundings and can detect when they don’t feel safe when they are not driving. This type of approach is important because not caring about who is behind you or misbehaving on the road can lead to reckless behavior. From speeding, to not seeing road signs, these are examples of terrible driving. Furthermore, driver’s education teaches the basics of a car, the consequences, and the security that comes with it.

When I first started learning how to drive, I started in my home country. As far as I knew, driving education was almost non-existent, let alone proper traffic laws to avoid accidents, and people were driving like they were in a race against time to see who could return home in time. Every time I took a lesson, I was very scared and worried about my own safety. Before all of this, I had a sense of excitement that quickly faded away once I stepped inside a car. It wasn’t until I moved to the u.s when I realized that I had a long way to go when it comes to being a safe driver. It was longer about speeding through traffic, or worrying about how I did. The focus landed on a whole different set of rules and differences I had to adapt myself into in order to improve and to evolve.

Regarding the amount of deaths caused by road accidents, I’ve witnessed one. A motorcycle accident. I can’t exactly describe the details, but it opened my eyes back then. I started to think about what could happen if I missed the mark while driving. I tried to forget about it ever since, but it was so impactful to me, that it was impossible to brush past it and move on. I realized how important this was, as I remind myself every time I see an accident in the distance. But there’s always a solution to every problem, which leads to my next question:

What can people do to become better drivers? Well, driver’s education plays a crucial role in reducing the number of deaths associated with driving by addressing both the technical and psychological aspects of road safety. When people complete extensive driving training programs, they are guaranteed to be competent drivers in a variety of driving situations, further encouraging responsible driving is driver education, which places a strong emphasis on following traffic laws and regulations. Moreover, the more people learn and open their minds, the less accidents we have.

Public campaigns, speeches, and social media promotion are also important to make the general public more aware. In a world where attention spans are decreasing and short-form content is the new norm to keep people interested, these attributes are needed in order for driver’s education to release itself from it’s closeted doors where only a few are really interested in learning how to be better drivers. Another important topic that is not talked about enough are road infrastructures, which are important for indicating what you are allowed to do on the highway. All of these are equally as important in order to improve.

In conclusion, driver education is a vital component of the overall endeavor to lower the number of fatalities brought on by driving-related incidents. Skill development combined with a focus on risk awareness, responsible behavior, and defensive driving makes educated drivers indispensable in creating a safer driving environment, and with personal experiences, we can definitely make a change.
