Drivers Ed

The importance of driver education pertaining to reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is extremely important. There are so many young, new drivers who need to seek knowledge on how to become safe and educated drivers. It is especially important for the youth to take driver’s education because we are the most inexperienced drivers. We are still trying to figure out the ways of driving, so we are more likely to engage in dangerous driving. We need to know the responsibility of being behind the wheel.

Taking driver education teaches you the rules of the road, and you also learn how to operate your car. You learn how to make good judgments based on how other drivers are moving around you to avoid accidents. Understanding the rules of the road allows you to be a safer diver, prevent accidents, and be more prepared when on your own.

The steps that need to be taken to reduce the number of deaths relating to driving are: one, pay attention to your surroundings. Two, pay attention to the signs around you. If the speed limit is one thing and you are exceeding the speed limit, slow down. Always wear your seat belt the correct way. Do not try to finesse the seatbelt to get it to stop beeping. Make it a habit to wear your seat belt, whether you want to or not. Do not drink and drive. It is illegal to drive while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or any other substance. You risk losing your life or your driver’s license. Get as much supervised driving practice as you can. Reduce the amount of time you spend on your phone while driving; doing so increases the risk of an accident. Pull over to the side if you absolutely must use your phone. Make sure your car is in good enough condition to drive. Verify that your vehicle is safe enough to drive just to be on the safe side.

I have seen someone around me drive recklessly. I was in the car with my family, leaving a funeral home to drive to the burial site, with a funeral tag on the window. We are on the highway, and I see two cars racing each other; they are part of the line of cars heading to the burial site! These people were young; of course, they were just doing it for the fun of it, but things could have escalated and gone south quickly.

I was already nervous because my dad has been driving for a long time, so he does things that I mostly would not do while driving because I am inexperienced and it is also risky. I have seen people running red lights and going above the speed limit.

The steps I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others are: checking my mirror frequently before making moves; looking before I enter a big intersection for safety; avoiding having tunnel vision; paying attention to everything around me; checking signal lights and signs; following behind cars at a safe distance so when you want to brake, you are not at an uncomfortable or potentially dangerous distance with the car in front of you.

Tunnel vision can be very dangerous while driving. You can avoid accidents by watching your surroundings and not just looking in front of you. You do not want to end up checking before it is too late. I have heard people tell me to drive defensively. According to this article, “The Keys to Defensive Driving,” it says: “As a defensive driver, you can avoid crashes and help lower your risk behind the wheel.” We must learn that we cannot control other people’s driving, but we can control ours. By getting better at being a defensive driver, I can avoid dangers caused by other people’s bad driving.

Something else I can do to become a better and safer driver is not to depend on other drivers. I cannot assume that a driver is going to move out of the way or allow me to merge without seeing that they are going to do so to avoid an accident.

In conclusion, the importance of driver education pertaining to reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is extremely important. So we need to be taking all precautions for our safety and the safety of others. We only need to invest the time to educate ourselves since safer driving can prevent so many deaths.
