Driver education is a fundamental component of road safety. It equips new drivers with essential skills and knowledge, reduces accidents, and promotes a culture of safety on the roads. Despite advancements in vehicle safety technology and tough traffic laws, driving-related deaths remain a major cause of death world wide. The Importance of driver education can’t be understated. Driver education programs provide critical instruction on the rules of the road, vehicle operation, and safe driving practices. These programs are designed to give more knowledge and educate drivers about traffic laws, road signs, and the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors. They also help develop skills by teaching important driving skills, such as defensive driving, hazard perception, and vehicle control Drivers education programs also help with confidence. They create responsible driving attitudes, emphasizing the importance of caution, patience, and courtesy on the road. Proper driver education helps prevent accidents by preparing new drivers to handle different driving conditions and things that come up on the roads such as emergencies. It also instills a sense of responsibility and awareness, reducing the likelihood of risky behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and distracted driving.

Some steps to reduce driving related deaths are to talk about the constant issue of driving related deaths, as a many faced approach. Here are several steps that can be taken at different levels to make road safety more prominent. Cities need to strengthen driver education programs by making sure the education has comprehensive teachings. They need to make sure driver education programs cover all parts of safe driving, including defensive driving techniques, the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, and the importance of seat belts. Mandatory training needs to happen in driver education programs for all new drivers, including a set number of hours for both classroom instruction and practical, behind-the-wheel training. On going training needs to happen as well. They need to offer refresher courses and advanced driver training for experienced drivers to update their skills and knowledge. The testing needs to be tougher as well. They need to make sure that driving tests cover everything and assess both book work knowledge and practical driving skills. It would also help if cities increased the enforcement of traffic laws, including speed limits, seat belt use, and laws against impaired and distracted driving. Stronger penalties may also deter people from reckless driving. If cities implemented stricter penalties for traffic violations, especially for repeat offenders and serious infractions like drinking and driving or driving under the influence or drugs. Improving the roads and spending more money on the roads with better signs and lighting and clearer markings would also be a help to safer roads.

I am not a stranger to traffic accidents. I have had many people in my life be affected by road collisions and accidents. My great aunt lost her husband in a single vehicle accident where alcohol was a factor. He left two young children and his wife to live without him. My grandfather hit an animal on his motor bike and it was a tragic crash that almost left him dead. Lastly, a very good family friend my age, was in a collision with a logging truck and he was injured so badly that he was air lifted to Vancouver Children’s Hospital where he stayed for months after surgery and physio therapy. Years later he is still affected by that accident. He has night terrors and he has fatigue and pains. From these instances in my life I have become very aware of the dangers that surround me on the roads. I took driving lessons before I got my licence from a RCMP officer and to this day I use the tips and skills he gave to me. Driving is a privilege and something not to take for granted. So many young people do not act responsibly when on the roads. This is why tougher enforcement and more comprehensive drivers training is a must. With those things we can only hope that our roads will be safer for everyone on them. Drivers education is imperative if we want to keep the roads safe. It should be no cost to every Canadian who is wanting to drive on Canadian roads. Drivers education should not only be offered in high schools across the country but also available to any driver at any age.
