The Importance of Driver Education and What Can be Done to Ensure the Safety of Others

The importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is to make sure that the person driving is comfortable behind the wheel and to get a lot of practice driving so they can feel comfortable driving. One step that could be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving would be to up the age to get your driver’s license from sixteen to eighteen so young drivers can get a few years to work on their driving in different conditions like rain, snow, hail, sunny, night, and more. Another step that could be taken to reduce the number of deaths that are related to driving could be for students to practice different ways of parking instead of parallel parking. In my own experience driving, I have barely had to do any parallel parking. I have mostly had to pull into a space, or the was a space open right in front of where I wanted to go, so I simply parked there. I have also parked in a space close to where I needed to go and walked the rest of the way from the car to the building that I was going to. Other than the instances that I have mentioned, I have not had to do any parallel parking. The main time that I did have to parallel park was when I took my driver’s test for the first and second time at eighteen years old. I say first and second time because I failed the parallel parking portion the first time, and I passed the second time doing the parallel parking part of my driver’s test. While it was a bummer to do the parallel parking section of the driver’s test twice, I got practice in between the testing dates. In the time it took for me to work on parallel parking, I feel like I got better at it over time. I haven’t done much parallel parking, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t have to in the future. With that, I believe that something could happen if a person was trying to parallel park and someone else did not see that. I say that something could happen because I feel like accidents could happen if someone is trying to parallel park. Another step that can be taken is when people are learning how to drive, introduce different obstacles for young learners to learn to recognize and safely avoid so when they do end up driving, they don’t freak out and end up causing someone to pass away due to them not being seen by the driver. I have not been in a car accident or have seen friends or family members driving irresponsibly.

On the other hand, I have driven through a left turn signal when I didn’t have the right to do so about two or three times. While it was a bad choice for me to make while behind the wheel, I learned from my mistakes and tried to make sure I didn’t do something like that again. I have also swerved while driving, even though I wasn’t trying to swerve. It was a windy day when this happened, so I feel like the wind was the cause for me to start swerving, but that doesn’t account for the fact that I still swerved. I also don’t like driving that much, but I know that I do need to drive to get around. In other words, I don’t drive a whole lot, which might be why I am not the biggest fan of driving. I know that I will get better at driving, there are days when I simply do not want to drive or offer to drive but am in a rush to get somewhere. While I have gotten better at driving over time, there are still days when it feels like I’m just starting to learn how to drive all over again. With that, being said, there are different ways I have thought of what both myself and others can take to be a better and safer driver. The steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road are to educate myself and others about what to look out for and what to keep an eye on. I could also check and make sure that everything in a vehicle is up to date and checked out before driving long distances so the car doesn’t break down in the middle of a busy road.
