In the driver’s seat

Being on the road can be very dangerous and you have to be careful. One thing that my parents have always told me is that driving is one of the most responsible things that you will ever do in your life. They also said that it is not just you and the people in the car with you that have their life in your hands, but it is also everyone around you. They also said that one small mistake can cause the person around you to get seriously injured or lose their life. This does not only hurt them and their family, but you have to live with the fact that you caused many people so much pain.

Driver’s education is one of the most important steps in reducing the number of deaths while driving. While you must have your learners license for a year and drive with experienced drivers so they can teach you, you might not learn everything you need to know. Normally when you have a learners permit, you only drive on the roads around where you live. This meant for me that I had no experience with parallel parking. Driver’s education taught me how to do this and I was able to pass my driving test. Driver’s education also teaches you about some of the dangers that you can face while driving that you might not experience when you had your learners permit.

One step that I can take to become a better and safer driver is realizing that I do not have much experience driving. One thing that I need experience with is driving on ice. I choose to not go out unless I have an experienced driver with me on icy roads. When you have ice on the road, you have to know how to handle your car accordingly. I make sure that the experienced driver can teach me how to drive on ice safely. If I choose to drive on ice alone, it would be very likely that I would make a mistake that could cost someone their life. 

Another step that I can take to become a safer driver is to get rid of all distractions while I’m driving. Ten percent of all wrecks are from distracted driving. This includes using your cell phone and talking to others in the car with you. I always make sure that my cell phone is either in my pocket or in the center console of my car, so this way it is out of sight and out of mind. I also make sure that when I am a passenger when someone else is driving, I make sure that they do not use their cell phone. While it does take some courage to tell them to not be on their phone, it is worth it in the long run to make sure that we do not get in an accident. I also make sure that I am not distracted by the conversation that is going on in the car while I am driving. If I am focused on the conversation and not the road, I could get in a wreck. I also make sure that when I am a passenger I do not take the driver’s concentration away from the road. I must make a conscious effort to do this because it is easy to get carried away and not think about the driver’s concentration on the road.

A very important step that I can take to become a better and safer driver is to pay attention to other drivers on the road. There are many people on the road who do not drive safely. I always make sure that I am paying attention to them. You must drive defensively and prevent an accident. Even though many of these accidents might not be your fault, they could cause you to get hurt or at the very least ruin your day. You should maintain hyper awareness when paying attention to all of the other drivers around you. Another thing that many people do not think about paying attention to is pedestrians. Pedestrians are much smaller than cars and move at a much slower speed so it is very easy not to even see them. They also do not have the same amount of protection as cars so any accident involving pedestrians is very serious.

To sum up, driving can be very dangerous and you must be careful and pay attention at all times. You must understand that even one small mistake can cost you, the people in the car with you, and other drivers their life.
