Driver education is crucial because it provides essential knowledge and skills to new drivers, helping them understand the rules of the road, the importance of defensive driving, and how to handle emergencies. A study by the University of Nebraska has shown that drivers who have completed educational programs are less likely to be involved in accidents. Young drivers who have not completed driver’s education are 75 percent more likely to get a traffic ticket, 24 percent more likely to be involved in a fatal or injury accident and 16 percent more likely to have an accident, the study showed.By emphasizing techniques like scanning for hazards, adjusting speed according to conditions, and reacting to other drivers’ mistakes, drivers ed explains the dos and don’ts.

There are several steps we can take at both individual and societal levels to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One thing that can be done at a societal level is having Stricter enforcement of traffic laws which would look like Increased penalties for speeding, driving under the influence (DUI), and distracted driving all of which are unsafe behaviors. Another thing that can be done is to improve driver education programs by Expanding education programs for easier access and making them more comprehensive. This proactive approach significantly decreases the likelihood of accidents. Proper education will help reduce common violations such as failing to yield or distracted driving. Incentivizing on the insurance end more for safe driving courses could also be implemented. For example, an insurance company offers a discount for people who take up their safe driving program, I know because I have taken it myself. Lastly, let’s not forget the vehicle itself. Advancements in-car technology, such as automatic braking, lane-keeping assistance, and collision warning systems, are a big help to prevent accidents. As a new driver, automatic braking really saved me from a lot of headaches. To be a better and safer driver I will Always follow traffic laws. Which specifically looks like Sticking to speed limits and stopping or following all traffic signals. I will also Avoid distractions to make sure my focus is entirely on the road, for me personally this looks like turning the focus feature of driving on my phone to active temporarily silencing notifications like texts or calls. To ensure others drive safely Never let a friend or stranger drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Remind them of the dangers of driving unsober. One step I often forget to be a safer driver is also one of the easiest, which is ensuring everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt at all times. And lastly Speaking up when necessary will help not only the person driving but other drivers since it takes more than one to cause a collision. If you see someone driving dangerously, it is worth calmly suggesting they slow down or pay more attention. From my personal experience, I have seen both friends and family members drive irresponsibly. One time my friends and I were together for a social gathering at home that involved drinks. Some of us thought it best to stay and sleep in rather than drive home. However, one specific friend said he was okay to drive and insisted that we let him drive home. So we did and we came to regret it. The next day thankfully he was okay however his car was not. He began to tell us how his drive home had cost him a lot of money. It seemed he had somehow managed to pop his 2 back tires on the way home and was driving on only the rims of his car. Crazy right? He came to this conclusion when he saw that metal scratch marks had been apparent on the road leading up to his house. At the time, due to his state of sobriety, it was not obvious that he was doing so. This only proves how driving under the influence can have adversely impacted you and others on the road. It’s safe to say that neither my friends nor I will make the same mistake of getting behind the wheel after being under the influence.

In conclusion, Driver education plays a vital role in enhancing road safety by equipping new drivers with essential skills and knowledge, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, implementing stricter traffic laws, improving educational programs, and leveraging advancements in vehicle technology are crucial steps that can collectively contribute to safer driving practices and a reduction in road-related fatalities. As an old saying goes “if you knew better you’d do better”. Help others become safe drivers by Setting a good example on the road.
