The
Importance of Safe Driving
Careless
driving has been a constant problem in our society for quite sometime
now. As a young 16 year-old teenager, driving is a part of adulthood
that utterly terrifies me, mostly because of the risk and sangers
driving entails. As someone who lives going up the accident prone
Highway 94 in Dulzura, California, I have seen terrible accidents
going up the curve-filled road. These accidents have been caused by a
variety of incidents, including drunk driving, slipping on rain, and
the most common, not slowing down on the road. The road where I live,
is a tough road for someone who has never driven on it. Many drivers
underestimate how serious the turns are in the highway, that they go
way too fast, resulting in a terrible accident. Enforcing harder
regulations on the amount of time spent in driving school, would
greatly reduce the 34,000 annual deaths because of car accidents, and
would enable anxious teenagers like me, to feel safe being behind the
wheels.
The
importance of driving school on reducing the number of deaths caused
by reckless driving is astronomical. Driving school prepares people
on how to properly and safely conduct a vehicle. Without driving
school, people would be driving in a mindless way, that would just
increase the already gigantic number of casualties caused by reckless
driving. Although driving school, in theory, should be the absolute
perfect mechanism for everybody to be safe on the road, many drivers
violate those driving rules keeping others on the road safe, for
specific reasons. Whether it be running a red light because one is
late to a doctors appointment, or speeding going 65 mph on a 50 mph
road because one is late to school, it is no excuse to put your life
and the lives of others at risk. Steps that can be taken to reduce
the amount of deaths caused by reckless driving is to set more
regulations on the amount of time needed to be at driving school. In
my home state of California, student drivers are only required to
spend 30 hours in drivers ed. Personally, I feel that is an extremely
short time, as driving is a huge responsibility and risk. People must
realise the importance of following the traffic rules, and by
increasing the amount of time needed to spend taking drivers ed,
they will realise that it is not something to just do to get it done
with, but do to understand and learn why it is such a priority people
understand safe driving.
I
have never been in a car accident myself, but I have had family
members be involved in some. My aunt, about 3 years ago, got into a
serious car accident, when the driver behind her ran a red light,
whilst speeding, and hit her back of her car. That instance, made me
realise how important it is to promote safe driving, as my aunt
could’ve ended up in critical conditions. To promote safe driving,
I participate in programs like this, to hopefully use my voice to
spread awareness on a bigger stage.
