The global epidemic of fatalities caused by
driving has become a major health concern, emphasizing the importance
of drivers ed. To be successful in reducing these fatalities,
one must become informed about the global road safety rules, develop
road safety skills, and imply them in the correct situations. Driver
education is extremely effective in enforcing these steps and
preparing drivers for the dangers that may occur and how to prevent
them. However, drivers ed classes are often only taught to new
drivers for a few months and then they are off on their own. To
further reduce the number of driving-related accidents, driver
education should be taught for a more extensive period to leave a
longer-lasting impression on its students. I also believe there
should be more interactive learning, such as driving with an
instructor. While it is already required that new drivers spend a
specific number of hours with an instructor, it often isn’t enough
for new drivers to experience the possible dangers that are present.
While I’ve never been involved in a car accident, I do know how
dangerous the roads can be since both friends and family members of
mine have been. As a recent high school graduate, I have also had
firsthand experience of being with others who drive irresponsibly.
While it is common for teenagers or younger drivers to believe
driving fast, doing donuts, and running stop signs is just to have
fun, they do not realize how quickly a situation can change from
having fun to causing irreversible damage; which is why road safety
needs to be more aggressively enforced. To ensure I continue to
become a better and safer driver I will often familiarize myself with
the rules of the road and be sure to apply them when I am driving.
Additionally, I want to begin turning my phone on silent when I am
driving to ensure that I am fully alert and focused on the road
instead of being distracted. I encourage others to follow these steps
as well. From following these two steps I can confirm I will be a
safer driver which will aid in making everyone around me safer as
well. We can reduce the growing number of driving accidents if
everyone works together by becoming educated on road safety and
working to apply these rules to their driving. Every person has an
impact on this epidemic whether they are driving or not. In
conclusion, being a safe and educated driver is extremely important
since the next driving accident to occur could involve you.
