Safety Rules

The number
one cause of fatal car crashes in America is distracted driving. It
is important to teach people about safe driving because people do not
believe that these fatal crashes can happen to them. Distracted
driving is anything from texting and driving to reading a newspaper
while at the wheel, but I do not think that everyone understands what
distracted driving is. Things that can be done to reduce car
accidents are education, following the laws of the road, and not
giving in to the pressures of aggressive drivers. Education is key
because teaching drivers how to be safe on the roads is the beginning
of becoming a good driver. Following the laws of the road is
essential because if everyone follows them there is a higher chance
that everyone will be safe. Of course, weather conditions need to be
taken into account as well as outside forces such as detours, but in
ideal conditions, if everyone follows the rules of the road accidents
would be drastically reduced. Finally, not giving in to the pressures
of aggressive drivers around you will help make the aggressive
drivers realize that they are driving recklessly and it will prevent
there being one more reckless driver on the road. Reckless driving is
the fourth highest reason for fatal car crashes, and a lesser amount
of reckless drivers would decrease the amount of car accidents. 

My
mom and I almost got into a car accident when I was younger. In
Philadelphia, we have a road that has a lot of windes called Lincoln
Drive. It was late at night and the person driving next to us was
driving crazily, and obviously was not giving their full attention to
the road. My mom was going the speed limit and this person was
sporadically changing their speed and swerving. So, unsure of what to
do my mom just slowed down to let the person get ahead, but we ended
up right next to each other and they almost drove us into the rocky
wall next to us, but my mom was able to speed up so that we were no
longer right next to them.  

One
precaution that I take in order to become a safer driver I utilize
the iPhone feature that texts someone saying that I am driving if
they text or call me. This feature has helped me a lot because
although people may not know when I’m driving they stop sending
texts which in turn allows or me to not be distracted by my phone. I
also ask to be driven somewhere if I feel too tired to drive, or I do
not feel comfortable driving in the area. These precautions have
helped me a lot because I have not gotten into an accident since I
have started driving, and my friends have done the same things that I
am doing because I have helped them realize that safe driving is an
important part of driving as a whole.
