Education is always an ultimate goal
Driving
is a significant part of our lives, since we depend on vehicles to
transport from one place to another. However, the number of deaths
resulting from driving has been increasing at high rates and not
surprisingly, more than half of all road traffic deaths happen to
those young adults aged 15 to 44. This is why drivers ed has
received great attention from the public as a way to reduce the
number of deaths as a result of driving.
In
driving school, students are taught to read the signs on the road and
understand street law of a particular state and of the country. The
basic purpose of drivers ed is to provide us with knowledge,
skills, and attitudes to drive safely and defensively. If more people
take drivers ed and drive safely, it is obvious to say that the
number of deaths will reduce, since more people are aware of the way
they drive.
Unfortunately,
taking drivers ed will not be efficient if the drivers do not
voluntarily want to protect themselves and others. They have to
recognize the problem in order to prevent it from happening. This
sounds hard, but the government can take action to impact their point
of view. For example, the government can require accident scenes as a
part of drivers ed. Driving schools must show intense accidents
and ask the students to think about the consequences if their family
members were the victim. Sometimes it works just to frighten them and
let them think about the problem carefully before they actually take
control of a car. Another example is that the government demands
smartphone manufacturers to develop the kind of smartphone that
examines the speed of the owner and the activities of the arm muscles
to know if they are driving or not. If they are, then the phone
should turn off automatically. When there are messages or phone
calls, it is best that the phone emits a soft sound to signal the
driver, simultaneously does not let the driver pick up the call nor
unlock the phone to type a reply until the car is fully stopped. In
this way, drivers have to stop by some coffee shop to activate their
phones and do what they need to do, or be patient and wait until they
reach their destination. This method will surely reduce the number
deaths resulting from distracted driving, especially those by texting
and answering phone calls.
I
personally have never been in a car accident, but I did see my family
members driving irresponsibly. Three cousins of mine, my brother, and
I went to Universal Studios on Halloween. We left at about two in the
morning and were all exhausted. My brother drove, but when we reached
our neighborhood, my brother switched seats with my cousin who was
learning to drive at the time. The three of us sitting in the back
were so scared and told the driving cousin to switch back, but they
both assured us it would be okay since the streets were empty at 3
AM. He let her drive a little bit until we reached home safely. My
cousin got her license a few days after, but letting a person with no
license to drive and driving without a license when there were 5
people in the car were an act of irresponsibility.
Unlike
my cousin who is very bold, I am the careful type of person. Despite
that, I still need to improve myself to be a better and safer driver.
To prevent distracted driving, I can put everything out of my reach
(food, phone, etc) to make sure I don’t eat or use my phone while
driving. I can also text my friends and family members notifying that
I will not be able to reply immediately because I will be driving. It
is essential to remind my favorite ones that because I love them,
they have to protect themselves from any preventable road accident. I
myself will wear the seat belt and concentrate on the road, so that
they can look at me as an example.
Death
caused by driving can be prevented. Everyone needs to have
self-awareness of their own driving so as to make the streets a safer
place to commute before technologies can step in and help to improve
that. We can definitely reduce the number of deaths caused by driving
by applying defensive driving and spreading the word about the
importance of being a careful driver – it does not only save your
life but also those of others. Be responsible!
