In The Driver’s Seat
Understanding
the rules of the road is the first step in preparing anyone to drive
on the road. Drivers ed is a great way to provide
you with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for vehicle
safety. Teens taking drivers ed are less likely to be involved
in crashes or to receive a traffic violation. Taking a driver’s
education course can lower your risk of death as a result of driving.
In my short time span of being a driver, I have seen that there are
so many different variables when driving on the roadways. Thankfully
taking the thirty-hour drivers ed course and ten-hour behind
the wheel course has prepared me for a lot of these variables. I
could not imagine how someone would fair on the road without having
this prior experience.
Some
steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is to take a drivers ed course. Through that course
it will teach you the rules of the road and how to practice safe
driving skills. Also, for young drivers we need to concentrate on
eliminating the outside distractions such as; our phones, music,
passengers and emotional state.
I
have been in a car accident with a friend of mine, traveling to
school. The cause of the accident came from my friend’s emotional
state. I realized this more after the accident than I did before.
This was a route we traveled every day. The conditions on the road
did not play into the accident and the traffic was the same as any
other day. The only difference on this day was the driver’s
emotion. He was agitated and was behaving recklessly. This change in
behavior led to him reacting slowly to the traffic in front of him
and coming into contact with another car.
Steps
I can take to be a better driver is to always be aware of the road
and of the drivers around me. To eliminate as many outside
distractions as possible and to be a defensive driver. I will also
use everything that I learned in my driving course to help me stay on
track. To help others become safer on the road I would suggest the
drivers ed course and on the road training.
