For yourself, your family, and for everyone driving out there- Be safe

We live in a society where teenagers and young adults believe they
are indestructible. We see bad accidents in movies but believe it
will not happen to us. Proper drivers ed allows us to see the
importance of being safe in the streets, not only for our own safety,
but for the mom who is driving her son to soccer practice, for the
parents driving home from work wanting to see their children after a
long day, for our own family waiting for us at home to worry less.
Proper driving education teaches us the importance of not being
selfish in our society.

Reckless driving is not only dangerous, but selfish. And whether we
like to admit it or not, young drivers are among the most dangerous.
In driving courses, the teachers not only work to prepare the
students how to properly drive a car- which headlights to use
depending on the fog, the speeds we should follow according to the
weather, and how to look when changing lanes- teachers also attempt
to prepare students by coaching them the importance of taking breaks
when tired, pulling over when the rain is too heavy to see, and how
important it is to not be any level of intoxication in their system
when driving.

However, most people still don’t seem to grasp or care for that
information. In my opinion, in order for the younger drivers to
accept and understand the importance of safely driving and reducing
deaths is by introducing this material first. How in a second of
looking at your phone you can kill a family driving by. How by
driving intoxicated at night (at any hour) you can just disconnect of
the road and crash against a tree, house, or another car. Because it
only takes a second to lose control.

Volunteering with victims and offenders might help drivers have a
better, closer understanding of the importance and seriousness of
driving. In my personal experience, experiencing the death of a close
friend to a drunk driver marked my life. We are not indestructible.
We don’t know what or when something is going to happen. We don’t
have control of the other people driving around us.

From my own experience, I actively take steps to reduce the exposure
of accidents for myself and others. I make sure the weather is in a
good condition to drive. I rest enough so I am not drowsy while
driving. I never look at my phone while driving, and if I need to, I
stop somewhere to do it. And especially, if I feel intoxicated, or
had more drinks than the recommended dosage, I do not drive. Because
waiting is better than losing a life. Because being late to a place,
is better than never showing up for causing an accident.
