Drunk and Distracted Driving
It
is incredibly important that all drivers are educated about what not
to do while driving in order to prevent vehicular accidents and
fatalities. A lot of parents will tell their children not to text and
drive, but don’t realize that people do a lot more than just text
on their phones while driving. People will scroll through their music
trying to find a song while driving, or snapchat their friends, or
even scroll through social media. Although, it should be
self-explanatory on why people should not go on their phones while
driving, a lot of people cannot be apart from their phones long
enough to get from point A to point B. It is very frustrating because
some of these people that are swearing on their lives that they will
never drink and drive, are the same people who are on their phones
while driving. Both actions can result in the same thing, an accident
and possibly death, but people frown upon drunk driving much more
than distracted driving. Anything that takes attention away from the
road should be monitored a lot more.
Some
of my favorite things to prevent distracted or drunk driving are the
signs on the interstate that state the number of distracted or drunk
driver fatalities in the state or in the country. This is a really
good way to get to people because many people believe that checking
their phone “really quick” is not dangerous, but the people who
are part of those statistics were probably thinking the same thing.
These signs can shock people into following the rules and putting
their phones down. Another thing that is awesome is with iPhones
there is the ability to put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” while
you are in a moving vehicle. People are constantly checking their
phones while driving because they are constantly getting
notifications, but with this setting on there are no notifications.
This should be required for all phones to be in this setting all the
time and should not be optional. This setting can truly save lives.
For drunk driving though, I feel like all cars should implement
breathalyzers, and not let people drive with dangerous levels of
alcohol in their systems. People that get DUIs must have these in
their cars, but it could prevent a lot of drunk driving accidents if
this were required everywhere.
A
lot of my friends like to dj while driving and check their
notifications and I am always telling them that I will change the
song to whatever they would like, and that I can send any message
that it is so urgent it needs to be sent right that minute. I do not
mess around with distracted or drunk driving because a close family
friends of mine lost their grandmother in a drunk driving accident
that was not her fault. It was traumatizing and eye opening for
everyone that knew her, and this is why I always advocate against
distracted and drunk driving.
