The Real Problem
Driver
training is very important. Kids often think they are invincible, and
kids with cars are the exact opposite. Cars can be very dangerous
when not used with caution. This is why driver safety is so
important, because it teaches us how to be safe and makes us think of
and remember things that are not intuitive or that we may not always
remember in the moment. The problem with driver safety, and all
driving rules and laws, is they cannot be enforced effectively
enough. There will always be ways to fly under the radar, to break
the laws without being caught, to fake the test. The only way to
really ensure that people will follow the laws or guidelines put in
place is to convince people that the rules benefit them, and they are
worth following. Then, people will follow them on their own,
following the spirit of the law, rather than the letter of the law,
and keeping themselves and others much safer. In order to reduce the
number of deaths and injuries while driving, the government or
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can focus more in driver training
on likelihoods of getting injured as well as causes, post
advertisements on billboards with statistics of injuries and deaths
and hopefully scare people in a healthy way to drive safely. The DMV
can also do thorough tests to make sure people still know how to
drive when they renew their license. One problem many people have is
they passed driver training when they were sixteen, but have long
since forgotten lots of it. Renewing this information in people’s
minds would help them to drive more safely, and know more recent
problems and how to handle them.
I
had one experience being in a car accident. I was driving my
grandparents’ car, and I backed into my family’s front fender.
This was a careless mistake because I did not follow the simple
fundamentals of driver safety by checking behind me before I started
driving. This scared me a lot as I was not sure how my parents or my
grandparents would respond. Luckily there was no real damage, and I
learned an important lesson.
I
can be a safer driver by clearing distractions in the car before I
start driving, by taking a few moments to mentally prepare myself
before I start driving, and by planning to leave earlier than
necessary so I am not in a hurry, because being in a hurry usually
leads to speeding, rushed decisions, and accidents.
