Protecting
Human Life

It
was 2013 and I was on spring break. On the way home, I got a text
from a friend, telling me someone at my middle school had died. After
checking the news, I found out that another 8th grader, Josh, had
died in a car accident in the middle of the night. The driver was
taking a turn too fast at night and ended up skidding off the road
and hitting a tree, killing Josh in the passenger seat. This was
devastating to all of us as a community and eye-opening as we began
drivers ed classes that summer and into freshman year. It was
clear that driving should not be taken lightly and we all need to be
safe drivers to prevent death from happening again.

With
this event in mind, I paid a lot of attention to drivers ed. I
wanted to make sure I knew all the rules of the road before driving
to protect myself and other drivers. I was, and still am, vulnerable
on the road as a new driver and knowing the rules for driving was
beneficial. There are rules for a reason and lives are at stake every
time someone gets behind the wheel. It can be easy to think that
driving is no big deal since everyone does it. But distractions are
available with music, phones, and friends in the car. Irreversible
events happen on the road and it could be from not following the
rules of the road or these distractions available inside the car. So
having education about this will allow every driver to be responsible
on the road and prevent terrible accidents from occurring.

The
first thing that comes to mind to reduce the number of deaths related
to driving is to give out annual reminders and reports on road safety
and the rules of the road. Oftentimes, people believe they have
experience and know everything about the road. But these said
experienced
drivers

are
the ones breaking road rules which result in deaths. So offering
these reminders about the rules of the road and also the consequences
of not following them could force people to see how serious it is
when they don
t
drive responsibly. The community has done a great job of reminding
people to buckle their seat belts when in a car and to not text and
drive, but other factors can impact safety like following the speed
limit.

To
prevent another accident like Josh
s,
I have focused on being a better and more responsible driver. I
always buckle my seat belt, put my phone away, and concentrate on the
road. And when I am in the car with friends, I remind them to do the
same thing. I don
t
want to lose another person to an accident that could have been
prevented by having an education or a reminder to be safe. Driver
education is the key to protecting human life on the roads.
