The responsibility to safe driving

The
responsibility to safe driving

Responsibility; this word alone carries connotations of a heavy
burden of accountability. This accountability comes in many different
ways however, as drivers we all carry the same responsibility, and
that is to practice safe driving in order to keep our streets safe
and free from danger. Drivers ed is an essential and
preventative step toward reducing the number of deaths involving
motor vehicle operation. Without the proper information, a driver can
be left ignorant to safe driving practices and tools to ensure that
every trip driven is a safe one.

Drivers ed provides drivers with proper knowledge when
accidents and life inevitably happen on the road. In addition to
drivers ed, taking extra precautionary measures and driving
defensively is a big part of reducing fatalities on the road. This
includes leaving more than enough space in between cars, driving the
speed limit and always being mindful of pedestrians and bikers.

Another part of reducing casualties is taking responsibility as
drivers to minimize distractions and avoid irresponsible driving
behaviors and patterns. This includes, not using the phone at all
while driving, making sure children are secured safely and occupied,
and not being rushed. Although I am fortunate enough to not have been
involved in a motor vehicle accident; I can personally attest to
distractions being a cause for concern while driving with friends and
family. In these situations, being a passenger with a distracted
driver initiates an overwhelming amount of anxiety and fear of the
worse.

Personally, to be a better driver I be ahead of schedule for places I
have to go instead of being in a rush. This will increase my
alertness on the road and decrease the necessity to speed. Another
great driving safety tip for those who find themselves driving and
listening to music, is preparing a playlist of songs you want to
listen in the car, to avoid navigating through your music, thus
keeping your eyes off the road. Another tip that can help prevent
irresponsible driving is trying to drive with at least one other
person in the car with you, to keep you accountable and who can
perform tasks for you such as: changing the music, answering text
messages and keeping you alert on long drives. In addition to these
practical behaviors, drivers should keep in mind that every time you
sit behind the wheel you are taking the risk of changing your life in
an instant. Even with what may seem like the small annoyance of a
fender bender to the worst-case scenario; life is simply too valuable
to place uncertainty on your life and the life of others with
irresponsible driving.

In summary, every driver is delegated the vital responsibility of
driving safely. No matter how long or short the trip, responsible
driving is always the best option. Lastly, I would like to thank DMV
Education for this excellent opportunity to apply for scholarship
funds. I would also like to thank the scholarship committee for
taking the time to review my application.
