Safety is Key

Driving
is no joke. Most people assume traveling by car is a simple and
effective way to get to their destination, but no one thinks about
the fact that they are driving a 3000-pound tin can at 65 miles per
hour.

I
got my license in December of 2019. Not two weeks later, I was cut
off by a lady and I did my best to stop, but unfortunately, my car
ended up impacted into the back of hers. Luckily, everyone was okay
and she was deemed 100 percent at fault. However, there could have
been ways to avoid that situation. The lady who I had hit was
careless and did not let me pass before cutting out into the road. It
can be assumed by her age that she has not taken drivers ed
in a while and if she had been refreshed on her driver’s safety,
maybe the situation could have ended up differently.

Driver’s
education is a necessity for anyone who already drives or is planning
on driving. I have a friend who had waited until she was eighteen so
she could skip drivers ed and the time commitment that
comes along with it. I fear for her safety as no adult or friend can
truly teach her the rules of the road from a professional view. I
believe that skipping drivers ed should not be an option at
all, no matter one’s age. I remember walking out of my class one
day telling my parents what I had learned and not even they knew
about those rules. That just proves how much more driver’s
education is needed throughout the state.

I’m
not suggesting that drivers ed should be required to take
every couple of years or something like that, but we need to better
educate citizens who have not taken the class in a while. The
drivers ed training course should not be thought about as a
class you need to pass to get your license, it should be cared about
as it is very educational, important information. Maybe instead of
only having drivers ed be taught to students, there could
be informational pamphlets at people’s jobs or maybe waiting areas
just to get the word rolling. If the lady I got in the accident had a
refresher on her drivers ed, maybe the circumstances
could’ve been different. No one ended up getting hurt in my
situation, but they could have.

Along
with drivers ed, people need to take into consideration the
potential distractions of the road. Something as simple as a radio
playing music could be enough to distract a driver where they do not
see what is up ahead. Turning signals need to be used at all times so
other people know where others are going and ringing phones can
always wait. If everyone follows the simple guidelines to the road,
the roads will become a safer place.
