Drivers Ed- A Course to Enhance Driving Skills or Is it a Waste of Time?

Drivers Ed-A course to enhance driving skills or is it a waste of time? Today I will be challenging the common cons around the controversial issue with pros of completing a course in drivers ed with: facts, benefits you’d receive after taking the course, and more.

Contrary to popular opinion, driving is not as easy of a task as it appears to be to many bystanders. The best drivers must undergo years of practice to get to their level of expertise. Therefore, drivers ed has been put in place to help drivers, mostly teenagers, enhance their skills before they have to drive daily.

Drivers ed is a course I’d recommend to anyone planning on getting their license soon. Earning a certification in this course awards many benefits such as: reduced insurance premiums, defensive driving practices, and most importantly-learning the rules of being an effective driver. Knowing the rules of the road prevents drivers, especially teens, from dangerous situations that could cause harm or death to themselves or those around them. According to a study, from University of Nebraska, teens (ages 16-18) are most likely to have traffic violations and accidents than any other age group. After the study was concluded, researchers noticed that the teens who took drivers ed were 75% more unlikely to have a car-related accident or obtain a traffic violation. However, many teens believe drivers ed is a waste of time.

Simply, understanding the rules of the road, is one of the first steps to helping contribute to decreasing the death toll caused by car- related accidents. Another way to prevent any accidents is to become familiar with the car you would most likely be driving, from simulations to “On- the-Road” practice. It is wise to alway remember, “Practice leads to perfection.” Unfortunately, everyone doesn’t apply some of these safe day-to-day practices to their driving, therefore, causing problems for the drivers around them. For example, in my city there is a median at West Rd. and I-45,- that’s known for many car accidents. Many drivers in this area are generally in a rush, therefore, they make careless mistakes such as: cutting drivers off, passing without their signals, and speeding in school zones. Most of the horrific accidents I have witnessed occurred at this particular location, which is why as a driver you have to drive for yourself and the drivers around you.

After seeing so many accidents caused by careless mistakes, I promised myself I would make sure I practice driving safely everytime I’m in a vehicle. While driving, I always put my phone on silent to prevent myself from texting while driving. In addition to silencing my phone, I pay close attention to all of the speed zones and pedestrians walking on the sidewalks.

Now, enrolling into a drivers ed class doesn’t mean you don’t know how to drive a car.The course is in place to teach you the best strategies to help you become a safer driver on the road. Drivers ed also helps you become aware of the drivers around you.Even though, you see a lot of people driving you have to remember: “Driving is not a right; it’s a responsibility.”
