Drivers ed Initiative Scholarship Essay
Unfortunately, there are not very many steps that can be taken to reduce he number of deaths related to driving. The biggest causes of fatal accidents seem to be distracted driving, driving under the influence, and where I am from, Nebraska, poor weather. This is somewhat unfortunate because it is relatively difficult to crack down on these any more than police officers already are.
Both distracted driving and driving under the influence are big issues that police all over the country are trying to put an end to but with distracted driving being a growing problem it is difficult for officers to catch enough of these drivers to make a point of it. The biggest distracted driving issue is texting and driving. Not all states have laws against distracted driving. If more states instituted these kinds of laws so that police officers were able to pull people over for using distracted driving and be able to give people fines for it. I think that people would be less likely and willing to use their phones while driving because they would be risking a fine and generally people do not like getting pulled over because it is very time consuming. To help reduce accidents caused by driving under the influence and distracted driving, states and cities would need more funding so they could hire more police officers in order to pull these dangerous drivers over and get them off the roads to make driving safer.
To cut down on accidents caused by poor weather conditions, where applicable, the roads need to be closed before they get to a point where they are no longer safe to travel on. This is because people will drive on them until they are shut down and then these people will get stranded on the roads due to the poor conditions and the authorities cannot go help them because the road is now closed. When bad weather is coming in if it is severe enough that roads may have to be closed, the roads should get closed preemptively to avoid this potential disaster. Every winter I hear about accidents that cause many injuries and deaths. These accidents seem preventable because science is far enough that we know when a storm that is big enough to cause problems is coming in long enough before it hits to shut down roads and make it safer for citizens.
It may be somewhat difficult to cut down accidents but there are ways to cut back on them. I think it is extremely important to make these changes in order to reduce the lives lost to car accidents and make the roads safer to travel on.
