Creating a Safer World with Safer Drivers
Driver education has come to be a mandatory action in order to earn one’s license, unless that person is over the age of 18. Participating in driver’s education is extremely important as it allows for the answers of many questions all new drivers have. It is mandatory for a reason. Along with this, it allows for new drivers to be on the road with a sense of confidence that they know they will be ready for many of the simple situations that come with driving, such as how to deal with differing weather conditions, hydroplaning, and parallel parking. This being said, many people who get their license after they turn 18 do not participate in this educational opportunity. Instead, they decided to take the shortcut in order to get to the road as quickly as possible. To try and prevent this, there has been increases in the cost of insurance for those who choose not to take the drivers ed classes, but it is not enough to influence everyone. This is a possible reason that the death rate of driving has increased.
To reduce driving based on the above principle, making it mandatory for everyone to take the classes no matter their age in order to receive a license may be a necessary step. However, this is not the only cause of car related deaths. In fact, teen drivers tend to be involved in accidents more, which is most likely correlated to their constant attachment to their phones. By creating an app that would prevent the use of a phone while driving except for music and a GPS, the rate in car crashes and car deaths might also be decreased. Along with that, simply wearing a seatbelt anytime a person is in a car could help protect them from harm.
To continue, I have seen and been in a car accident. My brother totalled his car when he was not paying attention and turned left into another car. He was also hit fairly bad on another occasion by a distracted teen driver on homecoming night. My mom and dad have also been in some minor car accidents, but none were considered their fault. I was also in an accident just last year. Nothing on my was badly injured, but I did come out of it with a fat lip and sore back. The teen behind me had been texting and accelerated into me at a stop sign, yet another reason why there needs to be measures taken against the normality of texting and driving.
To become a safer driver, I am a big believer in always wearing your seatbelt and never touching your phone unless you are at a red light and absolutely need to. My friends always laugh because even if a song I hate comes on, I will not skip it until the next red light. Along with this, my dad always forgets to put his seatbelt on and never seems to hear the alarm that goes off when he does. So, I make sure to remind him anytime I see him leaving or am in the car with him. Wearing a seatbelt is such a simple way to protect oneself, and it boggles my mind that people continue to not wear one, even after the obnoxious alarm goes off.
