Drivers Ed

Drivers ed

¨STUDENT DRIVER¨, What do you feel when you see that on the road ?Everyone is always worried when they are in a car with a teenager driving for the first time. The driver, the parents and sometimes even the person in the backseat who didn’t want to be there is worried. Since most parents are worried about their kids driving they registar them into drivers ed. Drivers ed is a program that prepares new drivers for their permit and licenses. Teaching them the ways and rules of the road from ages 16 to 18. Taking driver education can reduce the amount of deaths by crashing. Growing up i’ve heard stories about what happened to my aunt who drove without ever taking a course in drivers ed and never having experience driving. There are many steps you can take to be a better and safer driver just to protect yourself and others.

Drivers ed is something I think all teenagers should take in a type of way. Not by just getting the information from a parent who knows how to drive because knowing how to drive and knowing the rules of the road are two very different things. Many teenagers know what to do at a stop sign but then have to think whether to go, stop or slow down at a yield sign. 11.1 % of driving students were in a car crash compared to the 12.9 % of people who don’t take driving classes, and this is only from 2015. 2.1 %of driving students who died or got hurt from car accidents compared to the 2.6% who did not take the class.

When i was 16 i took drivers ed, i wanted to be more independent and have my licence. I did not get behind the wheel until my instructor knew I knew what I was in for. I knew when to go, stop, slow down, speed up, check my mirrors and just the rules of the road. If i messed up he corrected me in a calm manner. Although I was lucky enough to go to drivers’ ed my aunt wasnt when she was 17. A story I heard a lot from my family is that my cousin and aunt went to mexico and my aunt wanted to learn how to drive so on the way back home my cousin let her drive. She had never driven, didn’t know the rules, knew where the gas and break was but not very well. My aunt ended up crashing the car and getting injured.

Ways to protect yourself and others is knowing the simple rules. Check your mirror, drive the speed limit, red stop, green go, yellow slow down. Drivers ed can be pricey so find other easy to get information like the internet then have your family take you driving. When you are ready take your test. Be safe on the road it is never just you at risk, even if it’s only you in the vehicle.
