2020 Drivers Education Essay

What is the importance of driver education in reducing the number deaths as a result of driving?

Personally, driver’s education made me more scared to drive than I already was. I certainly learned the technicalities of driving among others and how to make sure I was following the law. I do think that drivers training is SUPER important for new drivers to learn the ways of the road and how to follow the rules of driving. I learned many things that new drivers need to learn. I only say it made me more nervous to drive because when we drove with the instructor it put so much pressure on you as a new driver, I get what they are trying to do but I almost feel like putting someone in a car for the first time with a stranger who is judging whether they pass or fail raises the nerves 1000%. I think that a nervous driver is a lot more likely to get into an accident or do something wrong than someone who is not under that kind of pressure. So, while I do think drivers training is effective. I think there is a better way to test a new driver’s skills. Maybe, a parent in the passenger seat would help ease the nerves and help the child focus on the road and not that they could fail at any given second.

What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving? Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly?

There are many things that can reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Sometimes and accident is just and accident and there is no way to avoid it unfortunately. Phones are a huge distraction to people driving and I see so many people driving down the road looking down at their phones and it makes my blood boil. I know there is a fine if people are caught on their phones in the car, but I do not think it truly makes a big difference, people still do it so often. Another step, in preventing deaths is just to not drive, take other transportation. Also, another thing to make driving safer might be to make vehicles safer and better quality to keep people inside better protected. My best friend since 5th grade passed away in a tragic car accident by the Fair Ground in Traverse City, 5 years ago. The boy she was riding with pulled out in front of another vehicle and she was killed instantly. I do not think anything could prepare you for that, it was a mistake, and it could happen to anyone at any time.

What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?

There are always things that I know I could do better while driving. I could always pay more attention to the road whether I am looking at the radio, glancing at my phone when I goes off, eating while driving, or plain daydreaming. Sometimes, I will get to a place and I will hardly remember the drive there because I was so deep in thought about things that I was just driving and not thinking about it. I feel like I could help other to be better drivers by telling them not to play on their phones while driving. I also think that animals in the car can be distracting so I always tell my sister to get a gate that separates the front and backseats so her dog cannot jump in her lap while she’s driving. Everyone could always improve their driving skills and as we get older I do think we would all benefit from another driving class once we hit a certain age because sometimes it gets too dangerous for others.
