A Guide for Enforcers to Implement Safe Driving
What does it mean to be a safe driver? A safe driver is one who is aware of their surroundings at all times, follows all road and environment conditions, and is ready to take action at any time. Throughout my time in school, there have been several presentations on the importance of driver safety; however, none of those presentations allowed me to see the true dangers of driving. They were always boring and I couldn’t drive at the time so it didn’t matter to me; that is, until my mom got into a car crash.
One night in October, my mom called my dad and said she had gotten into a car accident. When my mom came home she was shaken up and didn’t want to drive for months. I felt hopeless and scared to get in a car after witnessing what the dangers of driving did to my mom. Driver education needs to be enforced in schools now more than ever. Social media has encouraged young kids to disobey rules and to drive without their parent’s permission before the legal driving age. In order to reduce the number of driver deaths in America, regulation needs to be enforced in an informative and unforgettable way.
When imposing driving regulations, the enforcers need to understand that teenagers are not going to sit and listen to an hour presentation. They are most likely going to rebel against everything that was said and do it anyways. In order to get through to future driver generations, there needs to be fear instilled in them such as showing a victim of a car crash who is permanently injured. Enforcers should allow the victim to address the basic steps taken to reduce deaths such as wearing a seatbelt, taking a nap before driving, not drinking before driving, and adjusting your mirrors.
Teenagers drive carelessly all the time and I cannot expect that they would listen to adults, but I can take measures into my own hands and spread awareness myself. For example, I could create a colorful post-card and give it to my classmates to spread awareness on the importance of driver safety. The post-card would include little text, bright colors, and pictures of car crash victims to make it realistic. In order for myself to become a better driver, I will continue to turn down the radio so I can focus on the road, check my brakes, wear a seatbelt, and watch out for anyone who is careless on the road.
All in all, driving is a responsibility that people need to take more seriously. It amazes me how not many know that more driver deaths have occurred than the number of American soldiers from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. By instilling fear in teenagers and adults, they will understand the reality of dangerous driving and take measures to decrease their risk of death. This will lower the driver-death statistics in America and will allow people to feel safer on the roads.
