The Art of Being a Responsible Driver
The Art of Being a Responsible Driver
Driver’s education is vital to today’s society as more and more teenagers start driving and driver-related accidents start piling up. As a privilege, driving is not an activity to take lightly because of the consequences if one is not too careful to follow the law or safety rules. Whether it’s using alcohol and drugs, texting, adjusting the radio or air conditioner, or even lack of sleep, people can kill themselves from being distracted on doing activities other than driving. The purpose of driver’s education is to teach beginner drivers about these dangers and how they can avoid them by making the right choices. It can also teach them how to adjust their driving to different circumstances, like changes in weather or road construction, respecting other drivers to reduce aggression and ensure smooth traffic, and understand the consequences of not following safety rules and laws. Overall, the importance of driver’s education cannot be underestimated because it can help shape beginner drivers to become responsible citizens on the road and most importantly, help reduce the number of car-related deaths and accidents.
It is always important to know what to do and anticipate before and during driving. First, it is crucial that one should prepare himself or herself physically and mentally before driving so that they will be aware of any potential dangers ahead. That includes the fact that people should not consume alcohol or drugs before and during driving because they can impair one’s ability to concentrate on driving and even increase aggression, leading them to lose control and contribute to road rage. Then, they should adjust anything inside and outside of the car, whether that will be the radio, the seat, the AC, and especially the mirrors, so that they do not need to get distracted from adjusting them on the road. Drivers should also have thorough knowledge of common road signs and road markings that anticipate what is ahead of them so that they can take the right actions. People should check the weather for any conditions that can make driving impossible, like rain and snow, before they even start the car. However, if people have to drive through dangerous conditions because of an emergency, they will have to take extra precautions. Lastly, it is important to understand the maneuvers of driving because they can be useful in situations that require them, whether they are the three-point turn in tight spots, parallel parking when parking spaces are not present, or the turn signal to show that the driver is going to turn right or left. Overall, these are not all of the steps to follow when driving, but they are some of the most important ones to learn in driver’s education.
Although I personally have not been in an accident, I had a friend who drove recklessly when driving me and another friend home. He did this by briefly driving on the sidewalk and back on the road afterwards. Luckily, we did not crash into another vehicle or obstacle, but I was afraid we could if my friend was not careful enough. Another incident that was not an accident when the same friend drove me home at night and he blasted music while driving. However, I was not concerned with what he was doing because I tagged along and I made it to home safely, but it could have ended worse if my friend made a wrong move, such as if he swerved and hit another car or exceeded the speed limit at a fatal level. Overall, what these events have taught me is that I should not do such irresponsible acts myself or I would have gotten myself and others killed.
In order for me to be a better driver, I should learn to change personal habits that can prevent me from driving properly, such as looking at my phone and focusing on my thoughts rather than driving. I should also understand the effects of alcohol and drugs on the mind so that I do not take them before I start the car. I have to remain calm and steady when driving in busy places so that I don’t bother other drivers and cause them to end up in an accident. I would tell passengers to buckle their seat belt so that they remain seated and would not have to injure themselves in the event of an accident. Most importantly, I would encourage other people to study driver’s education so that they understand the responsibilities and consequences involved with driving. Overall, driving is a rewarding experience for every beginner driver, but like everyone, they must go through lessons on driving so that they master the art of becoming a responsible driver.
