Driver Education Initiative
The majority of people in the world are able to drive. From the age of fifteen people are able to get behind the wheel. There is a need to educate these people in order to keep them and all others on the road safe. Driver education is important in reducing deaths and effects on people injured as a result of driving. Many steps can be taken to ensure those on the road are safer.
Driver education is important in reducing the number of deaths related to driving. Knowing the rules of the road can significantly affect how safely someone drives. I did not know the difference between a green arrow and green light dealing with turning left until my mom told me a few weeks into driving myself. If my mom was not in the car to inform me this could have resulted in a tragedy if I had turned when a car was coming. Another example of safety by being informed is knowing when the yellow lines are passing zones. Knowing when it is safe to pass is key in safe driving. I am sure there are many deaths due to the lack of knowledge of rules of the road each year.
There are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. For example, a test could be required for all licensed drivers every other year. This way it would not be too frequent and would keep all drivers informed. This would test them on common road signs and laws that are essential to driving safely. Another step to reducing deaths related to driving is making sure no one is using their phone for any reason while behind the wheel. I learned this year in my psychology class that humans cannot multitask. This means that even if you think you can drive while texting or looking at something on your phone you cannot truly pay attention to the road while doing so. Some ways to prevent this distraction could be turning on the do not disturb on your phone while driving, using bluetooth to talk to people on the phone while driving, or putting your phone somewhere you cannot reach or see it while driving. Another way to prevent deaths while driving is to ensure no one is under the influence while driving. Whether it is by drinking or drugs no one should ever drive after. If someone chooses to drink or use one day they should give their keys to someone else before they do so. Deaths related to driving can be reduced by proper informing and renewal of knowledge dealing with driving laws and prevention of using the phone while driving or being under the influence while driving.
I have never been in a car accident but I have seen my friends and family acting irresponsibly while driving. My sister is jokingly said to be the worst driver in our family. If you met her you would know that she is someone who gets distracted easily. The reason she is thought to be such a bad driver is because she runs off the road many times while driving. This is usually because she gets distracted one way or another. Whether by an animal on the side of the road or by being on her phone she is not paying attention to the road. Thankfully she has not wrecked yet but is at serious risk. I also see my friends either text or talk on the phone while driving. This is also extremely dangerous and I hope they realize this soon. Usually people think they will not be the one to get in a wreck due to texting while driving until they do. My best friend recently got in a wreck when waiting to turn left and a tow truck did not stop before running into her car. It would be very possible that they did not stop because they were distracted and did not see her stopped. She is ok but the mental and emotional damage cannot be taken back. I have never been in a car accident myself but have had friends in them and seen my friends and family driving irresponsibly.
I can take steps to be a better and safer driver and help others become safer on the road. One step I can take is vow not to be on my phone while driving. I will do this by turning on my do not disturb while driving in order to not be distracted by my phone. I also will do my best not to be distracted by outside disturbances such as animals on the side of the road. I am not old enough to drink or use drugs and do not plan to but if I do one day I will not use them before or while driving. I also can keep myself and others safe by making sure I am informed on the rules of the road to prevent myself from getting in a wreck. I will take as many steps as I can in order to keep myself and others safe while driving.
Driver education and safety steps are important in keeping all people safe who are on the road. Properly informing drivers can prevent deaths and injuries related to driving. Steps such as frequent rules of the road tests and prevention of using the phone, drugs, or alcohol while behind the wheel. I have witnessed friends and family driving irresponsibly while driving as well as had friends be involved in wrecks. Steps can be taken by everyone to ensure the safety of themselves and others while driving. The proper education and prevention of distractions while driving are essential in the safety of all people on the road.
