The
Importance of Safe Driving – Jessica Haner

Drivers ed brings awareness to the dangers of the road. The
courses focus on teen driving safety. There are also courses in
defense driving that adults can take to become a safer driver. A
study conducted by the Office of University Communications University
of Nebraska – Lincoln shows that taking drivers ed
significantly reduces crashes and traffic violations among new
drivers. The school teaches students about the laws and rules to
follow “be aware of your surroundings” and “watch for what
other vehicles are doing, because some people do not use their turn
signal”. It teaches students to be safer and more of a defensive
driver.

One
step that we can take to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is to have less distractions. Put your phone away in the
glove box, your purse, or anywhere that it will not distract you from
driving. You can also put the phone in silent mode, or use the AUX
cord to connect the phone to the car if you need to use the GPS.
Bluetooth is just as distracting as having your phone in your hand.
Your full attention needs to be on the road, not divided by different
tasks and activities.

Unfortunately
I have been in an accident. I was speeding around a curve and not
paying attention to the road, and I ran over a mailbox. Luckily, no
one was hurt. After the accident I had to fix one of the tires and
pay for a new mailbox. I know now to watch my speed and pay more
attention to the road so that I do not lose control of my car and do
more damage elsewhere or hurt someone. When I am with friends, I have
seen them texting and driving. As soon as that happens, I ask them to
put it away or give the phone to me until the drive is complete.

I
personally put my phone away in my purse and put the purse on the
floor of my car on the passenger side. If I listen to music while
driving, I keep the music volume on low so that I can hear sirens and
any other sounds outside of my car. I read every sign on the road so
that I am aware of my surroundings, and know my location. I share my
safety tips and habits with my friends so that at least we all can be
safe on the road while driving. I know that when more of us use safe
driving habits, the road will be safer for everyone.
