Take
the wheel or take a life.

To take the wheel of a vehicle is a big responsibility and it takes a
lot of unfounded trust. You have to trust the other drivers on the
road, people you have never meet, with the lives of you and your
passengers. It takes great responsibility to get into the driver’s
seat and turn the key. Safety laws can only go as far as people are
willing to follow them. But what happens when people do not drive
responsibly? Danger, destruction, death. It all comes with the
freedom we exercise in driving to a party, to work, or back home.
It was told to me during my drivers ed course that if a
person is in an accident, it will likely occur within ten miles of
the person’s own home. This is because most people become
lackadaisical the more comfortable they fell with their surroundings.
I never fully understood the danger that comes with driving until I
took the classes of driving education. It truly opened my eyes.
It is rare for me to see any of my family members or friends drive
irresponsibly, except for one specific person. I never want to be in
the vehicle when this person drives, and if I am, I feel very
uncomfortable. I am lucky that I have never been in a car accident,
however, my mother and my brother were. They were bruised up and my
brother had some nerve damage on his leg but considering they were in
a five vehicle accident, they were blessed. The accident was not
their fault, but it was someone else’s. And that person had to deal
with the entire crash because he was at fault.
There will never be a way to eliminate error from the driving world,
but there are many steps that can be taken to make people aware of
the danger, to make people more cautious when they turn the ignition
key. Laws against cellular devices have made a considerable
difference. Clear road markings and defensive drivers make the
highways safer than ever before.
Defensive driving is one of the easiest easy to reduce the number of
deaths due to driving. When a person is cautious of their own
movements in the vehicle as well as everyone else’s movements in
their vehicles, we see the result through lowered deaths due to
driving. Taking the wheel does mean taking your life into your own
hands. It also means taking the lives of others, complete strangers,
into your own hands. Will you take the wheel and take responsibility,
or will you take the wheel and fake responsibility? It is all up to
you.
