Most
people are unaware of just how dangerous driving can be. Simply
looking away from the road for even a few seconds can be very
dangerous. This is why drivers ed is so important when it
comes to driving safely. It teaches rules such as the three-second
rule in which three seconds is the distance a driver should keep from
the car in front of them. Following this rule allows for a thorough
IPDE (Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute) process. If the car in
front of a driver brakes suddenly, it is the driver’s
responsibility to make a decision on how to safely get out of the
situation. Drivers ed teaches us rules like this that can
potentially save lives reduce driving related deaths.
Back
in the day, drivers ed students had to pass a driving
stimulation test before they were able to get behind the wheel in a
real car. This allowed for the students to experience driving safely
without actually driving so they would be able to bring this idea to
the road. Studies show that the majority of driving related deaths
are that of teenagers to about thirty years old. This is usually due
to phones being prominent in the lives of this age span. Social media
and text messages sometimes distracts us while driving. They teach us
in drivers ed to never text and drive, but most people
still do anyway. This could be from not enforcing the idea enough.
Texting and driving is a very serious problem that should be one of
the top driving safety rules. Bringing back the simulation could also
potentially reduce the number of deaths as well since that age frame
has less driving related deaths.
Thankfully,
I have never been in an accident. I have however been in the car with
my sister who is always on her phone when she drives. She is not the
most responsible driver and I fear that it will catch up to her one
day. I always offer to drive instead or ask her to put it down
because I am not comfortable with her doing that. She is stubborn
though so I often lose the fight, but I want her to realize the
dangers she puts herself in as well as her passengers when she does
this.
When
I drive, I often put my phone in driving mode. This means my phone
will not go off when I get a notification and therefore will not
distract me from the road. Because my sister always has something
going on on her phone, making it to where nothing is going on would
benefit her greatly. When I have a passenger, I give them my phone.
That way if I get a text, they can read it aloud and respond for me.
My sister will sometimes tell me to do this when she drives as well.
I believe every driver will benefit by taking these simple steps in
order to keep their lives out of danger.
