I
live in a small farm community where kids learn to drive at a very
young age. Most parents teach their children to drive farm machinery,
or even a pickup to help with their family operations. It isn’t
until we get to high school before we learn the proper way to
function vehicles. Therefore, more accidents are prone to happen.
Drivers ed courses are important because teenagers who are
learning how to drive need to be taught properly to prevent
accidents.
Encouraging
students to take drivers ed is necessary to prevent themselves
from getting injured or killed, as well as the lives of everyone else
on the road. The more people who are educated and drive the right way
means fewer casualties. Taking these classes improves the knowledge
of all drivers. However, some people take the class and go through
the motions, not learning how to drive properly. This endangers
everyone. All drivers need to be aware and ready for anything on the
road. This means being alert, off phones, and any other distractions.
Today’s
society makes it to where most people cannot live without their
phones. Many people text or call while driving. Likewise, individuals
use their phones to play music, which causes them to look down and
scroll through lists to find the perfect song. Similarly, changing
radio stations may be a diversion. Distractions such as these cause
many fatal accidents. One step to safer driving and fewer fatalities
on the road, is putting phones and other distractions aside. Before
one puts the vehicle in drive, phones should be out of sight, and
music should be chosen. This benefits the driver, the passengers, and
any other person who may be in danger.
Another
step that can be taken to reduce driving-related deaths is forcing
all citizens to take a drivers ed course. When everyone knows
the rules and learns how to drive safely and responsibly, fewer
accidents will happen. Many people do not know all of the guidelines
of driving. If everyone is taught, there will not be as many lives at
risk.
In
my community, many teenagers text and drive. We have had four
accidents related to this issue. Furthermore, I am aware of some
adults who drive irresponsibly by texting or not wearing their
seatbelt. I am a member of the Seatbelts Are For Everyone Program
(SAFE) which promotes seatbelts, no texting, and safe driving habits.
In my community, I do my best to demonstrate, educate, and encourage
safe driving practices. I will continue to take the steps to become a
better driver myself and assist others around me to make our roads
safer.
