The
lack of education for anything is extremely detrimental, especially
when it involves driving a two ton missile down a busy street.
Drivers ed is very important in that it teaches future or
current drivers how the roads should be driven on. If every vehicle
was on the same page when it came to driving there would be no
accidents. The knowledge of knowing what to do when anything comes
your way is crucial in finding the safest route to anywhere. Not only
that but to understand simple things like parking correctly or just
turning on the windshield wipers can improve the number of deaths.
Humans aren’t the best at paying attention while driving but someone
is bound to see what is going on and if they are educated enough they
could stop before an accident occurs.
Certain steps can
be taken to even out the number of faulty humans who could be
potential problems. First one being education. Education is huge, it
is what allows for the other steps. Second, applies to distractions.
Drivers need to understand that when they are behind the wheel they
are in control of a very fast, heavy, and dangerous moving object.
There is no room for distraction or other attention grabbing tasks.
Third is the need to understand your vehicle. If there are tasks that
you believe your car can do but actually can’t could cause damage
and possibly a dangerous situation. Finally practicing how to drive
correctly is always important. To take a driving course once in a
while to refresh your knowledge could very quickly help lower death.
I personally gave
these ideas because of personal experience. I have never been in an
accident but I have heard plenty of stories and seen potential risks
first hand. A police officer once came to my school to tell us the
importance of seat belts. He taught us how without it the number of
crash related deaths rise tremendously. So now without even thinking
I put my belt on. I learned and received an education on it giving me
more safety. Whenever my family goes on a ride I get sight of the
driver having their phone out. I get severe fear from seeing it
because on another occasion during driving ED we watched a video of
what the damage of distractions are. With my personal experience of
having very malfunctioning cars I now have learned the strains my car
can and cannot take and if I over strain I have the possibility of
stopping right in the middle of a busy road. Finally, when I was at a
car show they had a mini test driving course. They were teaching
people how to drive. I volunteered to participate and learned a lot
more than I thought.
With all that I
have learned I now actively teach others. When I am a passenger in a
car and I see the driver failing to do something I speak up. If they
are texting I take their phone and text for them. If they are holding
food I hold it for them. When the driver messes up while driving,
like they forget to signal, I verbally tell them. There was even an
instance when one of my family members were driving and got really
distracted. So much that they swerved into oncoming traffic. I
immediately yelled at them and they quickly swerved back into the
lane. It was a close call and if I wasn’t paying attention it could
have meant our lives.
