Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
Drivers education is an important course for students to take in light of the fact that it teaches them to be responsible and safe. It is important for potential drivers to especially refrain from beining under the influence while behind the wheel. This is crucial to driving responsibilities in order to avoid the deaths of themselves and other sober drivers.
The best way to refrain from accidents caused by driving under the influence is to stay abstinent from driving after drinking. Alcohol is a depressant drug that can not only impair a motorist’s vision and ability to judge distance, but can also begin to impair their coordination, balance, and reaction time. The only way one can sober up is time. Even the tiniest sip of alcohol can make a motorist more likely to crash. 1.5 ounces of 80-proof whisky, 12 ounces of bottled or canned beer, and 5 ounces of a glass of table wine have one thing in common; they each contain about a half-ounce of alcohol. It’s not about what one drinks, however, it is about how many drinks they have.
Safety can also be preserved by maintaining a healthy blood alcohol concentration limit. Blood alcohol concentration, or BAC for short, is the only scientific way one can check how much is too much. It is determined by the quantity and duration of consumption, body weight, and food eaten beforehand. In New Jersey, the legal BAC limit for motorists under 21 is 0.01 percent, while the limit for those 21 and over is 0.08 percent. The risk of having an accident for a motorist with a BAC just over 0.05 percent doubles. If the BAC is over 0.10 percent, the risk of having an accident is six times greater. If one refuses to take a breath test. they are subject to violation surcharges.
Being a good host can also go a long way when it comes to driving safety. A host can be involved in a lawsuit if their guest gets involved in a drinking and driving crash after leaving the party. Hosts should never encourage guests to consume alcoholic beverages or insist on refills. Hosts should also always provide non-alcoholic drinks and provide nutritious foods and snacks. They should stop serving alcohol well before the end of the party. If someone drinks too much, it is important to not let them drive. Should other transportation be unavailable, hosts should offer their guests to spend the night or insist on a nap. As a last result, hosts should notify the police.
On New Jersey roadways, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence or in posession of drugs without a valid prescription. Drugs that affect basic driving skills include cold pills, tranquillisers, and prescription medications that “may cause drowsiness or dizziness.” Marijuana is the drug after alcohol that is most commonly found with drivers involved in crashes. This drug can impair tracking ability, distance judgement, vigilance, and divided attention. Not having any of these can result in accidents and possibly death.
While I have a vague remembrance of an experience of someone driving under the influence, there is one specific experience that I would like to discuss. While my mother was out of the house, her then-boyfriend, his buddy, my brother, and I were driving to Wendy’s around 12 AM, when buddy was intoxicated from beer. He did drive safely, but it was clear that the amount of alcohol he had consumed affected his ability to follow along with requests. This would later teach me an important lesson: no one should ever drink and drive. It is incredibly unsafe and can put drivers at a greater risk of getting into accidents.
Being a completely sober driver is overall crucial to safety in order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. If I was the host of a party, I would serve non-alcoholic drinks and nutritious foods. If a guest drank alcohol, or took even the smallest sip, I would be strict about letting them drive. I would call a cab, taxi, or lift to take the guest home safely. I would especially drive them home as long as they sat in the rear seat of my car. Should other transportation be unavailable, I would let them sleep over at my house and offer refreshments the following morning. If they refused to spend the night at my house, I would notify the police.
Driving is a task where one has to constantly pay attention to their surroundings. Being under the influence can take away the ability to do that, as well as other responsibilities in driving. Maintaining a BAC of zero-percent is incredibly important if under the age of 21. People can also be good hosts in order to prevent accidents and deaths. If taking a prescribed medication with side effects that can cancel out driving abilities, being behind the wheel should be prevented for a while after the consumption of that medication. It is overall important to remain sober before, during, and after driving.
