In the Driver’s Seat

Driver Education is very important in reducing the number of deaths while driving. In my experience with Drivers Education, I had the opportunity to drive with my instructor in the community. My instructor went over the laws of the road and had us take the test to make sure we understood the ways of the road. Driver education gives us the experience and knowledge that we need to be safe drivers. Anybody can read the Drivers Manual and pass the test, but you will not have as much wisdom as the ones who went through Drivers Education. Reading the Drivers Manual is very important but when you have the opportunity to ask questions about it and discuss it is very helpful in expanding your knowledge.

There are multiple steps that you can take to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Texting and driving is a big issue. You can wait to text the person when you get to your destination. Drinking and driving is another issue. If you want to go and have a couple of drinks, then you need to designate a “sober” person. What I mean by that is there needs to be a person who does not drink so they can take you home. People need to pay attention to the other people on the road. People run stop signs and red lights, and if you are not paying attention to the road you could be killed. My parents have always told me to be a defensive driver. Another issue is having too many people in the car, especially when you first start driving. When you are driving for the first time, you want to have all of your attention on the road and not on the people who are in the car with you. You need to start with just you and then gradually build on the number of people in the car as you gain more experience. People speeding in the rain is another issue. When it first starts to rain, the oils from the road are pulled to the surface which makes the road very slippery. If someone is speeding on a slippery road and slams on their brakes because the light just turned red, then they are going to skid either off the road or hit the person in front of them. Also, when there are puddles on the road and a person is speeding, they can lose control of their car and hydroplane causing them to either go off the road or cause a massive pileup. Not wearing a seatbelt is another issue to discuss. If you are not wearing a seatbelt and you get into a car accident, you can be flung out of the window and die. Whenever the driver puts on their brakes, the seatbelt tightens and you are unable to move forward. Also if you pull your seatbelt too fast, it will not move forward. Seatbelts are there to protect you and your passengers from serious injury. All of these steps can help reduce the number of deaths related to driving.

I have been in the car when my dad has been driving irresponsibly. Sometimes, my dad drives too fast. He also texts while he drives. I am always scared when he texts and drives like that. My parents have gotten a ton of speeding tickets, but they have not gotten in any serious trouble. My friends always race their cars at night. I always hear them talking about it. I often think to myself that I will not do anything that crazy. I have never seen a car accident happen in real time in front of me but I have seen the aftermath of them or have heard my mom say do not turn around because they just had a wreck. I have almost been in a car accident two or three times, though.

I will not text while driving. I will not drink and drive. I will listen to my parent’s advice because they have more experience with driving. I will also be a defensive driver so I can prevent my chance of being in an accident. I will make sure that I am paying attention to the speed limit and what speed I am traveling at. I will educate others on how to be better drivers. I can give them tips and pointers so they can implement them into their driving skills. I can tell my friends to listen to their parents because they have been driving longer than we have and they want us to be safe on the road.
