The Importance of Drivers Education; On the Road, Defensive, and How to Recover
I remember, as a kid, I always wanted to be able to drive a car; when I was 7, I was so excited to sit without a booster seat; at age 10, I was able to move to the front seat, at this point in my life I was thrilled I was tall for my age because of this. Age 14 was when I started high school. I needed rides everywhere because of extracurricular activities, and being a teenage girl, I always hung out with friends and wanted to go to the mall. Finally, when I was 15, I could start a driver’s education. I was very excited; this was my first step to freedom. As I began getting more involved and driving for the course, I became very nervous and anxious on the road. I had been in a car accident when I was younger, and my mom kept reminding me that although I may feel like a good driver, other people are not. I can still recall the brisk winter morning, driving to school, and then a moment later, our car was spinning, and my mom and I were both screaming; our car stopped and fell into a ditch, the airbags came out, and our car had been totaled. My mom and I were both okay, and the excellent police officer even gave me a stuffed animal to try and compensate for what had just happened. Although we were fine, the woman who hit us was unfortunately not. She was in a smaller car, and her legs were stuck in the front of her car. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. We found out she was texting and driving. I am not sure what the outcome was, but I do hope she is alive and well today. My mom would remind me of this story because it is very possible that this could happen to anyone, mainly because of the new technology that is coming out.
I took my driver’s education course and passed my test on the first try. I was so excited. One week into my driver’s license, I got into a car accident. It was not my fault. I was driving on a main road at the speed limit; a white truck turned left very early and t-boned my car. I was terrified at the minute, but we both turned around to figure out the next steps. This accident could be avoided by keeping the ethics of driving school. The first thing they teach you is to look left, right, and then left again. Beyond merely teaching the rules of the road, driver education instills a deeper understanding of defensive driving techniques, road safety protocols, and the potential consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel. By fostering responsible driving habits and heightened awareness of potential risks, driver education contributes significantly to accident prevention.
Furthermore, it equips drivers with the tools to navigate complex traffic scenarios, handle emergencies, and make informed decisions on the road. While obtaining a sound driver’s education, there are many steps to reduce not only the number of accidents but also the number of deaths. Stricter Licensing Standards: Implementing more rigorous testing and licensing procedures ensures that only competent and responsible individuals are granted permission to drive. Another way is better enforcement of traffic laws, Increasing law enforcement presence and ensuring strict adherence to traffic regulations, including penalties for violations, to deter reckless driving behaviors. As it starts to get darker earlier in the winter, Investment in Infrastructure would help. Improving and maintaining road infrastructure, including signage, lighting, and road design, enhances safety and reduces the likelihood of accidents. Brands have already started promoting technology, encouraging the adoption of safety technologies in vehicles, such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control, to assist drivers and prevent collisions. My mom’s car has these features now, and it helps. Public Awareness Campaigns are also another idea. Launching educational campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, driving under the influence, and other risky behaviors, focusing on changing societal attitudes toward responsible driving. Strict DUI Policies, especially in college towns, even though it can happen anywhere. I am implementing and enforcing stringent policies against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including mandatory testing and severe penalties for offenders. Continuous Research and Improvement would also significantly help. I am investing in ongoing research to identify emerging risks and evolving technologies to enhance road safety and update policies accordingly. By adopting a multifaceted approach that combines education, enforcement, technological advancements, and community engagement, societies can work towards a significant reduction in driving-related fatalities. As a college student, some steps I have been continuously taking after my accident and will be taking are avoiding distractions, Practicing focused driving by minimizing distractions, Keeping my phone out of reach, and programming my GPS before driving, as well as avoiding eating or engaging in other activities that divert my attention. I have also been staying on top of Maintaining my Vehicle. I regularly ensure that brakes, tires, lights, and other essential components are in good working condition. A well-maintained vehicle is safer and more reliable.
Last but not least, I practice patience on the road. I avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating and road rage. Stay patient in traffic, and respect others’ right of way. I was told you never know what the car in front of you may be experiencing. They may be older and not know where they are going, or possibly unexpectedly get an emotional call. This is one of my top values while on the road. By consistently practicing safe driving habits, educating yourself, and encouraging others to do the same, you create a safer road environment for everyone. Remember that safety is a shared responsibility, and each individual’s commitment significantly impacts overall road safety.
