Four years ago, my parents were involved in a devastating car accident. On their way home they were hit by a reckless driver who had lost control of their car. My dad said he never saw it coming and that it was a complete surprise. My parents made it out alive but the driver passed away as a result of the accident. When my parents managed to get home they were in complete shock. This had never happened to us before. It was one of those things that you assume would never happen to you and only to other people. It wasn’t until that night that we realized we were also considered other people. We also lost our family truck because the damage to it was beyond repair. It was a terrible loss and a terrifying experience for my parents. What made it worse was that it could have all been avoided had the other driver involved not have been so reckless. I nearly lost the lives of my family because someone else didn’t know how to drive.

Driving education is an important part of being able to drive and yet many people don’t take it as seriously. Taking a driving course may seem like a minor step towards getting your license but it’s much more than that. It is meant to make sure you understand how to drive safely and efficiently without harming others. There is a reason why most states require a certain number of hours in driving school. Because they teach you basic safety precautions and driving laws to ensure that you know what you’re doing. Driving laws are different in every state and even expert drivers may not know every single one. These are things you can’t just learn as you go along especially when you’re going to be on the road with other people. Driving safely isn’t just meant to protect you but also the drivers around you whose lives are just as precious as your own. Driving education can also teach you what to do in case another reckless driver is putting you in danger. You can’t control how the other person is driving but you can control what you do to avoid them. Driving education can provide you with useful information that may help individuals during their time on the road. For all this training to work it has to start at the beginning.

It’s easy to blame driving accidents on the individuals who made the fatal mistake. After all it is their responsibility to know how to drive safely and properly if they want to maintain their driving privileges. Because driving is just that, a privilege. But there are not enough resources available for them to properly learn and retain this information. While I can’t speak for every school in the U.S., I myself can say that my school does not educate their students about driving safely. This to me is shocking considering that most people get their permits and license during high school and yet my school offered no help or support. This leaves students to fend for themselves when trying to learn how to drive in accordance with state laws. Which is not a good idea since traffic accidents are a common cause in the deaths of young teenagers. High schools should take more responsibility in properly educating their young students when it comes to driving. Otherwise people’s lack of driver’s education will either lead to an accident or growing up as poor drivers in the future.

Whether most permanent choice of action would be to require schools to provide students with drivers course and make it a requirement. That would ensure that students properly learn the importance of safe driving and how to do so. This solution might be very effective but would also be difficult to achieve. Other options would be for schools to at least provide students with alternative options for driving education and suggest outside materials and services. Parents could also shoulder more responsibility in providing their children with the proper tools they need to succeed on the road. Even driving schools can lower the cost of their driving courses to make it more accessible in case people can’t afford to pay for the course. Overall, the best thing anyone can do is to become more educated about safe driving early on and to educate themselves on how they can improve their safety while on the road. It’s not the most interesting subject in the world but it is the most necessary.
