Safe Driving Saves Lives

For many Americans, driving is a major part of our lives. Driving enables us to get to and from home, school, work, practice, and any other places our life brings us. Considering this, we hold a huge responsibility when driving that needs to be taken seriously on the road. Most students go through a driver’s education program helping them learn the rules of the road. This course helps students grasp the concept of road rules, how to handle a car properly, and the importance of paying attention when driving.

When initially starting out, driver’s education teaches us the fundamentals of a car: accelerating, braking, steering, and other mechanical operations. Knowing how these work is essential to safely driving a car. There is a lot to learn about driving a vehicle which can be overwhelming, however, as the lessons continue we get more comfortable operating a motor vehicle. The knowledge of these key ideas helps prevent accidents, setting students up for success during most encounters on the road expected or unexpected.

Driving education helps students learn the rules and regulations of the road. This course teaches a variety of different regulations to obey like traffic signs, road markings, and speed limits. Although the long list of rules may seem dreadful, they are there for a good reason. These rules have caused fewer accidents throughout the nation on the roadways.

There are many important takeaways of driver education programs however, one critical aspect is educating people about drunk driving. Drunk driving is one of the country’s largest social challenges. Preventing this danger is extremely important for keeping the roads safe. When individuals are educated on the consequences that come with driving under the influence, they are less likely to engage in irresponsible behavior. Therefore it is extremely important to understand the effects drunk driving can have on anyone who is driving on the road. Most individuals grasp the concept drunk driving can be deadly, and with this knowledge, we can create safer roadways.

As a country, we need to take action to reduce the number of deaths due to accidents on the road. The first place we can start is driver education programs. It is crucial for driving education programs to continue and improve over time. After taking a look at the driver education programs we can promote safe driving by keeping music volume down, both hands on the steering wheel, and staying alert at all times.

When I was just 15 years old learning to drive with my driving instructor, I had an experience of my own that helped me learn the importance of safe driving. During my last driver’s lesson, another vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign while crossing a double-lane highway. Due to the driver’s inattentiveness, I along with my driving instructor came to a dead stop, smashing into the side of the other driver’s truck. Fortunately, everyone involved was able to walk away from the accident with minor injuries. This experience has forever changed my life and made me realize how important it is to be fully attentive as well as understand and abide by the rules of the road because of the responsibility you carry when getting in the driver’s seat.

Besides my own experience, I have first-handily seen my family members and friends operate a vehicle on the road unsafely. I’ve seen them text and drive, become inattentive, and even go excessively over the speed limit. As a bystander it worries me to watch the risk they are putting on everyone however, my voice telling them to stop can only go so far.

I often ask myself what I can do to help promote safe driving. I know simply by following the rules of the road I can make an impression on others. For instance, by wearing my seatbelt, keeping my hands on the steering wheel, lowering the volume of my music, and never driving under the influence I can lead by example and create a lasting impact on others.

In the bigger picture, I can actively promote safe driving by joining a campaign. There are a wide variety of initiatives that have an end goal of promoting safe driving. These initiatives make a huge difference in a country because they bring awareness and encourage responsible behavior while driving. Any difference big or small can help decrease the accidents on the roadways.

In conclusion, the driver education program is a very valuable tool that can help students from a young age understand the rules of the road if taken seriously. Laws, accessible resources, and individual responsibility are important to making the roadways safer. Sharing my experience of the accident I was involved in with others can make a positive impact towards safe driving. As a country, by coming together we can make roadways safe while preventing unnecessary accidents on the roadways.
