The Pathway to Ensuring Road Safety for All

In today’s society, there are a variety of causes of motor vehicle accidents. These accidents cause serious injury, fear, and even death among people across the world. However, these accidents can be prevented in the future with practices that people can take part in, including myself.

The most common causes of motor vehicle accidents are distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and adverse weather conditions. Distracted driving is when vehicle operators are texting or talking on the phone while driving. Speeding is another common cause, as when speed is involved “the likelihood of serious injuries or fatalities increases significantly”. The probability of accidents increases when drivers are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs their thinking. Finally, unfavorable weather conditions increase the likelihood of accidents because of fog, snow, and rain. Especially when drivers speed during these conditions.

Motor accidents can be prevented in the future by driving responsibility! By not texting or calling while driving, distracted driving accidents will decrease because individuals will make sure to remain focused while driving. Driving at the speed limit will reduce speeding accidents as drivers will not be speeding, decreasing the likelihood of accidents, serious injuries, and fatalities. Also, driving under or at the speed limit during unfavorable weather will reduce accidents because the risk of slipping or sliding will decrease as drivers drive slowly. To prevent impaired driving accidents, individuals can call an Uber or designate a friend driver before taking any substances so that they will not be driving while under the influence or putting other drivers at risk.

Motor vehicle accidents have increased over the last decade and can cause life-threatening injuries. These accidents are commonly caused by distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and adverse weather. However, these accidents can be prevented by not driving under the influence, reducing speed, not using electronics while driving, and driving slowly in adverse weather. It is important to inform individuals of the dangers and ways to prevent motor accidents to improve road safety and awareness.

As a relatively new driver, there are times when I may find myself distracted when driving. When this happens I have to alert myself of my actions and make sure that my focus is on driving. Being distracted while driving is dangerous and comes with lots of risks. In order to put these habits to a stop I intend to create a step-by-step plan to reduce my distraction, ensuring not only my safety but others as well.

When driving I love to listen to music. Music is probably one of the top reasons why I enjoy driving. However, this means that I tend to get distracted by changing songs that are playing, trying to connect to my music app, or trying to find a playlist. This causes me to be less alert on the road, increasing my risk of swearing out of lane, not seeing pedestrians, or seeing a red light late. It is important for me to stop this habit to not only ensure my safety, but other’s safety as well. To prevent this habit, I intend to create a playlist prior to driving so that I won’t have to worry about a playlist not working when driving or skipping songs. Making sure that my music is working and in the order I desire prior to driving, I can ensure that I will not be distracted by my music decisions when driving, they’re being more alert on the road. Also, if I want to change a song or playlist, making sure that I am parked or at a stop light prior to changing the music will also make sure I am not driving with a distraction.

I can also put an end to my distracted driving habits by becoming an example for others and educating them on the dangers of distracted driving. To promote safe driving among my family and peers to prevent and reduce accidents I can inform them of the risks of speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and driving during unsafe weather. I can alert them of the injuries such as spinal cord injuries, whiplash, and even death. I will also remind them to obey the road rules to ensure that they are safe and not putting others in harm’s way. Informing my community of these practices is significant because it will aid in motor vehicle awareness so drivers can be more aware of the risks and causes of accidents. This will encourage individuals to make smarter decisions when driving such as driving slower. These practices will also ensure that my family is safe, and other people on the road are not put at risk with their driving. I will also hold myself accountable because I will be educating others on safe driving habits, therefore making me reinforce these tips in the form of my own actions.

When driving I find myself distracted by switching through songs and wanting to read notifications as soon as they arrive. However, I will put an end to these habits in order to drive safely, and not put others at risk when driving. To hold myself accountable, I will also inform those around me of the dangers of distracted driving and solutions so that I can be an example to them through my own actions as well!
