The Reflections of Responsible and Reckless Driving
We always hear that driving is a privilege, but for one family friend of mine, that privilege came at the ultimate cost—cut short by the choice of a drunk driver. On October 2, 2021, a 31-year-old man blinded by reckless confidence and dismissing every caution, chose to drive oblivious to the irreversible heartbreak of the friends and family of Simon and his two friends. In one tragic moment, his disregard for the law and the lives of others forever changed the futures of three young friends, leaving behind a painful reminder of the devastating impact of one careless decision.
Drivers’ education is about more than just learning how to operate a vehicle; it’s a course in responsibility, awareness, and respect for the lives of others on the road. I never imagined that someone I know would be a victim of drunk driving—let alone a friend so close in age. It still feels surreal. When I think of Simon’s story, my mind often wanders to the millions of other cases involving drunk driving. Why do some drivers believe that arriving at their destination is more important than their own life or the lives of others on the road? As a society, we have fostered a mindset that we are invincible to the effects of alcohol. But young drivers like myself need to be reminded that we are not above the law and that tragedies can happen in an instant. Too often, teens and adults alike rush to make curfew, arrive on time for work, or shave a few minutes off their ETA. For young adults taking driver’s education, parents should be more involved. Teens need to understand that driving under the influence or breaking the law out of fear of missing curfew are never justifiable. The consequences of facing a parent’s disappointment are much better than the irreversible impact of breaking the law.
Driver education programs are designed to prepare young drivers not only for the practical aspects of driving but also for the risks involved, such as impaired driving, distracted driving, and reckless behavior. When teens understand the gravity of these dangers, they’re more likely to make responsible choices. If the driver who struck Simon and his friends had understood the potential consequences equally to the basic skills of driving, Simon would still be here today, continuing to light up the lives of those around him.
In addition to strong driver education, practical steps can be taken to further reduce the number of driving-related fatalities. Accessible and affordable ride-sharing services or designated driver programs can help people make safer decisions. By prioritizing and implementing these steps, we can create a culture where young drivers—and all drivers—understand that their choices behind the wheel can mean the difference between life and death.
Unfortunately, Simon is not the only person I know whose life has been affected by reckless driving. Whether it’s seeing friends text while driving, watching family members speed, or myself trying to get to school a little faster. I’ve witnessed many close calls and risky behaviors. It is hard to be mindful when I am surrounded by actions that normalize reckless activities. Social media is a circuit of people eating and driving, using their mobile devices, or worse, ignoring the reckless behavior surrounding them. These experiences have shown me just how easy it is to take safety for granted and have made me realize the responsibility that comes with driving. The road is a shared space, and each of us has a duty to protect ourselves and others by making safe choices.
As I continue to build up my driving skills as a newer driver, I am committed to making choices that prioritize safety, both for myself and for those around me. I will remind myself and others to stay off the phone while driving, avoid speeding, and make responsible decisions if I ever feel tired or impaired. In memory of Simon, I will also encourage my friends and family to drive safely, whether it’s offering a ride when someone is tired or reminding them of the risks of distraction. I know that I may never be able to fully prevent accidents, but by setting an example and promoting safe driving practices, I can contribute to a culture of awareness and responsibility.
Losing Simon has taught me the true weight of each choice we make on the road. Driver education, stricter laws, and a commitment to safety can help prevent the heartbreak of losing loved ones too soon. Though Simon and his friends are no longer here, their story remains a reminder of why safe driving matters.
