In the Driver’s Sea

The importance of driver education to reduce the number of deaths as a results to driving is not driving while being distracted. I have been distracted just by talking on the phone And having an argument with someone. When you are driving you should not talk on the phone for any reason because taking your eyes off the road can cause a traffic accident.

In 2014 I was having an heated argument with my sister that could have waited until I was at home. I was so caught up in getting my point across that I hit the car in front of me at a red light. I immediately hung up the phone with my sister and got out the car to greet the other driver. I felt bad and started apologizing before they could say anything. The driver told me to slow down because I was crying and all the emotions that I had from the conversation with my sister was coming out.

He told me to pull over to the side so the other cars could pass by. He was an older male named Thomas. He allowed me to get my thoughts together and calm myself. Thomas was not mad that I hit his car. There was barely a scratch on the car. But he wanted me to think about how dangerous it was for me to be arguing on the phone while driving.

Instead of calling the police to make a report. Thomas asked me to do him a favor to keep others safe while driving. He could tell that I was confused by the request from the look on my face. He held up his hand to not speak so that he could explain. He stated that he wanted me to stay off my phone while I was on the road.

That day changed my life because that accident could have been so much worse than it was. I am thankful that Thomas was able to see that I was not emotionally unstable to be driving. He allowed me to get all my frustrations out before getting back on the road. It taught me valuable lesson for me is that you are not just driving for yourself. You are driving for th surrounding drivers as well.

You may see something ahead that other drivers do not see. This can reduce the number of accidents. Staying off your phone can help greatly reduce the number of accidents because you can be emotionally unstable when driving to see the road clearly. Making good decisions before getting behind the wheel will also help reduce the number of accidents. If you are distracted before you get on the road think of another option to get to your destination.

I have been out with friends drinking at a restaurant and got behind the wheel. Drinking can increase your chances of getting into a car accident. Drinking can impair your thinking and cause you to have a slow reaction to oncoming traffic around you. Even if you feel okay to drive you may want to think of another option to get home. It is safer to leave your car than to get behind the wheel.

We did not get into an accident but we could have been responsible. I knew she was not sober enough to get behind the wheel. But when you are young you think you are invincible. I was not thinking that anything could happen to either of us or other drivers. Reducing the number of accidents is about thinking about others. That is what being a safer driver is all about.

Being a safer driver you have to think of others. Sometimes you have to think of other options to get you safe to your destinations. Your family and friends can take you where you need to go. We often are too prideful to ask because we do not like the word no. There are other options that we can explore as well.

Booking you an Uber or Lyft can be another option. But this option is dependent on how far you have to travel. And if it is not too far you can walk if the weather permits. All the options can greatly reduce you to become a safer driver. Becoming a safer driver does not mean you always have to be behind the wheel. It is about putting other people’s needs before your own. It is about making responsible decisions to keep everybody safe to reduce accidents.
