Importance of Drivers Ed
To ensure the safety of the roads, especially in the context of a country that is only growing its reliance on cars, driver education is of extreme importance to our society. A large amount of accidents and deaths that are caused on the roads happen due to carelessness and a misunderstanding of the rules of the roads by careless drivers. Driver’s Ed is the only way to efficiently teach and instill an understanding of the road into prospective drivers, it can provide a detailed look into every rule and can help a driver prepare for any situation they might find themselves in. Those who learn through their parents in their hometown, which can be very common, will not adequately prepare the student for more complicated city roads. Another thing that driver education is essential for is ensuring that drivers understand how dangerous the machine they are operating is, and the possible dire consequences of losing your focus behind the steering wheel. In today’s society, everyone has a phone, something which is admittedly hard to look away from, many people feel as if they are missing something when they aren’t looking at their phones. Many people give in to their urges and look at their phones, answering texts, and taking phone calls. Driver’s Education can help them understand how even glancing at their phone for a second can cause an upheaval of their own life and others’ lives. As much as their parents might attempt to instill in their children the importance of being focused while driving, many children ignore their parents, but hearing it from a trained professional will hold more weight and they will be less likely to give in to the temptation of their phone. Although I have never been involved in a car accident, I do know people who have, including my friends, and have heard stories about people who have been greatly affected by irresponsible driving. Multiple of my friends have been a part of small crashes, and although they were able to avoid any serious injuries, they were left with serious damage to their car. This left them without cars for months and led to them being in some financial trouble, these accidents could have been avoided if they had been focused on driving. One of my friends crashed his car after looking at his phone while driving, and he is still feeling the repercussions of his decision today. Years ago, my grandmother was unfortunately also part of an accident, which took place because of the other person’s carelessness. Although she did not pass away directly because of the accident, she was in the hospital for months following the accident because of her collapsed lung. She was in and out of the hospital for months after that until she eventually passed away a few years ago. Another person who I don’t know personally, but is a friend of a friend, lost his father in a crash while was in the car. His car was hit by a drunk driver, and his father passed away shortly after the accident. All of these situations, with varying levels of severity, impacted both parties’ lives very negatively, and those careless drivers live with regret every day for giving in to temptation. There are many steps that I can take to become a safer driver, I have not been driving very long and I think I have been very safe but there are still ways that I can improve. Although I avoid looking at my phone while driving, it is still next to me and the urge to check is very strong, especially when I can hear it buzzing with texts from my friends. I can start putting my phone in a place where I cannot reach it, or hear it buzzing, therefore I am not constantly reminded of the temptation. Another thing that I can do is continue to drive in unfamiliar places to get more practice, as I have not been driving for very long I am not completely perfect and I think it would be very beneficial for me to continue to practice. Often I can go up to a week without driving, but I must continue driving as much as I can to make sure I never get rusty. I also often listen to music while driving, this often causes me to sing and makes me take a little concentration away from the road. While driving you need to have one hundred percent of your focus on the road as things happen in a split second, meaning that taking my attention away, as little as it may be, to listen to music is dangerous. I could stop listening to my music which takes my attention and instead listen to the radio, which peaks my interest less than my own personal playlist.
