what steps can be taken to reduce the amount of driving deaths?

Why are there so many driving deaths every year and what can we do to reduce this number? My essay topic for the scholarships is what steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving? I will talk about the different steps that can be taken to reduce driving deaths, the topics are Age considerations when driving mainly elderly people driving on the road, drunk driving so people who are intoxicated while driving because it’s such a big problem, and texting while driving which is also a huge problem also mainly in younger people.

My first topic is Age, age is a huge thing when driving and it causes a lot of accidents because of how elder people are driving. Me personally I have met a lot of people that have got in accidents and have lost someone or got severely injured by an elderly person. A step we could take to reduce this is that after a certain age people should have checkups to make sure they are adequate to drive on the road. We all know the older you get the strength of your sense’s severely decreases causing people to not move as fast and have slow reaction times which are key when operating an automobile, so having checkups would make sure their senses are still working properly, and they are good to operate an automobile. Another step that could solve this is essentially uber for the elderly who just can’t drive anymore it would be a safe alternative. I have been thinking about this for a long time, and this seems like the best option so they can still get around while saving lives.

My second topic is drunk driving, drunk driving is one of the number one causes of automobile deaths so if we can reduce this it would be a big deal. Drunk driving is a huge topic in today’s world. I personally learned a lot about it in school because we lost some people to drunk drivers who went to our school. A step to reducing deaths by drunk drivers would be DUI checkpoints, they are not used a lot nowadays wo reusing them would be a good step to stop the drivers before anything happens. This is huge because everyone gets tested on the road and it seems like the number of irresponsible drunk drivers just keeps increasing and this could stop them. Another big step to reducing drunk driving is I think just more patrols on the roads, especially at nighttime watching how people are driving and pulling them over and stopping them before they get any farther and cause harm to themselves or anyone. This could decrease this by a lot because a lot of people get away with it or kill people because there were not cops in that area watching drivers and stopping drunk drivers.

My last topic is texting while driving, this is another big cause of death while driving because people are taking their eyes off the road. The whole point of driving is to keep your eyes on the road not on your phone even if it is a split second that split second can change your life. A huge step to solving this is when people are driving the phone can sense they are driving and essentially stop them from being on their phone at all while driving besides music. This is a pretty good solution to keeping people’s eyes on the road, especially with the rise of phones and technology. Another huge step is making opeating a phone while driving illegally so people who drive with their phone will get immediately pulled over and given a ticket and points revoked off their license. This would be a big one because people do not want to pay for a ticket or get points removed off their license.
