Education Prevents All

Forty-four thousand, six hundred and eighty people died due to dangerous driving in 2024 – this represents a slight decrease of less than one percent compared to 2023. This means over forty-four thousand six hundred and eighty people have been struck by grief due to these losses. This means over forty-four thousand six hundred and eighty brothers, sisters, friends, and loved ones have been devastated by these losses that could have been prevented. Learning to drive safely and protect yourself from others’ reckless driving will save lives. Even slowing down as someone desperate is tailgating you may save their own life and others. Something my father always told me is that it’s better to arrive late than not to arrive at all. Driver education plays a crucial role when it comes to reducing traffic fatalities by teaching people essential skills about driving safely and defensive driving, but there are still steps we can all take to ensure safe roads for everyone.

Driver education is important because it will provide a strong foundation for road safety, traffic laws, and vehicle operation. It is essential that new drivers realize how vital it is for them to drive safely; it can truly save lives. It will equip them with the essential skills and knowledge to reduce the likelihood of accidents and promote responsible driving habits. Teenagers who receive drivers ed are less likely to be involved in crashes or receive tickets during their first two years of driving. A study by the AAA Foundation revealed that driver education reduces crashes by 4.3% and convictions by nearly 40%. It’s also important to receive Driver Education early on, as studies show that drivers licensed at 18 have significantly higher crash rates than those licensed at 16 or 17.

Once licensed, there are steps that we can all take to prevent driving-related deaths. We should always prioritize seatbelt use, securing us to the vehicle and ensuring we don’t go flying out of the vehicle if something were to happen. If people were to go out clubbing or going to a bar, always ensure that there is a designated driver that remains entirely sober: even a bit of alcohol can reduce reaction time and, therefore, raises the likelihood of an accident. Defensive driving is also very necessary when it comes to driving because, though you may drive safely, others may not and may hit you, which can cause a serious accident. It is also crucial to ensure your vehicle is maintained; you would not want your vehicle suddenly stopping on the highway, potentially causing a major accident.

I have been fortunate not to be in any serious car accident, but I know people who have. I remember my dad would tell me stories about the multiple times he crashed because he fell asleep or was distracted; luckily, in the end, he was fine and is still alive today. Recently about a year ago, my friend got into an accident that caused her car to flip upside down, the airbags exploded open, and the windows shattered. She told me how she was left traumatized and found it quite difficult to ride in a car again. The odds of dying in a plane are one in 11 million versus the odds of dying in a car, which is one in 5,000. I believe that car crashes can be life-altering and can change drivers to be safer and more aware of their surroundings. Some people may get so comfortable they are no longer cautious.

Driver Education is like elementary school; it is where the driver is shaped to be responsible and able to handle the challenges thrown at them. They are taught how to operate a vehicle and the foundations of safely driving before advancing further. It is where they can be taught to be patient, not give in to road rage, and that life is more important than the destination. The truth is Driver Education can’t stop crashes from happening; it can prevent them but not stop them. There will always be a reckless and desperate driver who will cause a crash and cost the lives of several people. It is up to the driver themselves to take the information they receive and apply it to their daily lives: if they’re willing to arrive late rather than not arriving at all. It is all up to the person and how responsible, considerate, and cautious they are, which is why it is up to the parents/guardians to raise them to be so. Only then can driver education teach them to be safe drivers, creating safer roads for everyone.
