The Importance of Safe Driving: A Personal Reflection
Education provides new drivers with a deeper understanding of the dangers that lie ahead when safety is overlooked. Not everyone has experience with reckless driving, and for many, driving may seem like an opportunity for freedom and social interaction. However, statistics show that driving practices have a far greater impact on society than simply offering freedom and convenience. In 2022, 2,547 teen drivers lost their lives in car crashes. In 2021, drivers between the ages of 15-20 were the most likely group to be involved in fatal crashes (www.nhtsa.gov, 2023). The dangers of reckless driving may not always hit home unless one has been exposed to the harsh realities of car accidents and their consequences.
Internationally, safety management combines several “central pillars,” including engineering, road and vehicle maintenance, traffic control, law enforcement, and driver education, to reduce the number of crashes and vehicular deaths (Akbari et al., 2021). Local laws have adapted to include consequences for distracted driving to curb the deadly combination of texting or using other tech devices while behind the wheel. Insurance companies also incentivize safe driving by penalizing young drivers for speeding or phone usage while driving. Organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) work to educate and advocate for sober driving. Public campaigns raise awareness about the importance of having a designated driver or planning ahead to avoid driving under the influence, which can result in DUI charges or even vehicular homicide due to negligent driving.
However, it has been shown that simply stating these laws and providing education may not be enough. Driver safety must begin at home. Parents play a vital role by modeling good driving behavior and reinforcing safety practices. They can talk to their teenage children about the importance of safe driving behaviors, such as sober driving and understanding the significance of the BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) rating. Parents can also discuss the dangers of drowsy driving and the potential consequences of neglecting self-care. Additionally, they can help their teen drivers practice these behaviors in real-life situations, bringing the lessons learned to full circle.
I personally experienced the impact of reckless driving when I was 7. I was in the car with my mother when a teenage driver hit us. He was a pizza delivery driver who pulled out in front of our car unexpectedly. I lurched forward in my seat and sat there dazed and confused while everybody else figured out how to deal with the situation. After the accident, he apologized and admitted that he was focused on getting back to work rather than paying attention to the road. He was in a hurry to deliver the pizza on time and get back to his next delivery, and as a result, he failed to look before pulling out. His priorities superseded safety measures. My mom was injured with a cervical sprain that still affects her today. Fortunately, we were in a 35-mph zone, and my mom was vigilant, maintaining the speed limit and staying alert. Without these latter factors, this accident may have had a different ending. Likewise, if that teenage driver had been better educated or behaved with more caution, the accident could have been completely avoided.
I have also witnessed and been involved in efforts to prevent reckless driving among other family members. These efforts included recognizing and stopping someone from driving drowsy, when they almost caused an accident by veering off the road. It included taking the keys from others who had consumed alcohol and insisting on driving or refusing to get in a car when someone else was intoxicated.
As a newer driver, it is essential for me to take steps to enhance my driving safety. I can look to statutes, legislation, and experienced drivers for guidance on safe driving practices. I must familiarize myself with current and changing driving laws, as safety behind the wheel should be taken seriously. A vehicle can be a dangerous weapon if not used responsibly, so I must be aware of my abilities and continuously practice to improve my driving skills. I will set clear boundaries for my passengers and their behavior while I am driving. I will refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, I will establish personal rules, such as turning off my phone or setting it to “Do Not Disturb” before starting my car. I will plan my routes to avoid feeling lost or distracted while driving. As a new driver, it is not only crucial for me to educate myself about safe driving practices but also to practice them and set a good example for others.
