Safe Driving

Driving is a
privilege not a right. Many of today’s drivers do not understand
that. Too many people on the road drive with such carelessness that
they are dangerous to others. I can help to educate these drivers. If
drivers were more educated, the amount of deaths would decrease. Too
many deaths today are a result of careless actions that could be
prevented. If people we more educated about the risks associated with
drunk driving and improper use of a motor vehicle, it would save many
more lives.

We all hear
stories about the tragic deaths of loved ones and others in our
community. Recently, three out of four girls in Gretna, Nebraska died
in a car accident. That night, they were severely intoxicated and
decided to drive. Traveling at 90 miles an hour, they ran into the
guard rail. If they were more educated about the risks of driving a
car while intoxicated, maybe they would not have lost their lives. It
is very important not only to educate drivers about not operating a
car while being under the influence, but also just teach them about
driving in general.

I think that it
is my responsibility to educate the drivers of today and tomorrow.
One important step would be making all of the drivers take a class
every five years. This class would make them aware of the dangers of
operating a motor vehicle, refresh them about the rules of the road,
and educate them about how many deaths due to driving. I would also
participate in this class and make sure that I followed all of the
traffic laws. I would make sure I go over the DMV Driving Manual and
refamiliarize myself with information that I am not as comfortable
with.

Also, I think it would be beneficial to have new drivers spend more
time practicing. Teenagers should be able to get their permit earlier
than fifteen. Just one year of driving is not enough time to become
adequately prepared for the responsibility of driving. Many teenagers
these days do not truly understand the consequences of their actions.
I would help by making them aware that their actions could end an
innocent person’s life. “Practice makes perfect,” is not just a
saying, it can make all the difference to make the roads a safer
place.

Overall, I think if people were more aware about the dangers of
operating a motor vehicle, the number of deaths from car accidents
would reduce dramatically. Through a personal account, I know the
effects of making poor decisions while driving. If new drivers had
more practice before driving by themselves, I believe there would not
be as many fatal accidents. An educational class every five years for
the current drivers would keep their memory fresh about the laws of
the road and the dangers of driving. I believe that it is my
responsibility to educate the drivers of today and tomorrow to reduce
the amount of deaths from car accidents.
