education is extremely important in reducing the number of deaths as
a result of driving by warning us of the potential dangers of
driving. Drivers ed teaches us that we must be responsible,
focused drivers with good instincts in order to ensure our own
safety, along with the safety of all others in the car. Without
drivers ed, one might be tempted to text, drink, eat, or engage
in other reckless activities while driving without understanding or
know the true consequences that could happen, such as speed
violations and car accidents.
Besides
taking drivers ed courses, of course, there are several
steps we can take to reduce the number of deaths related to driving;
for one, we can practice mindful driving by putting away all
distracting or harmful devices, such as cellphones, cigarettes, and
drinks, to avoid being tempted to drive recklessly at all. However,
there may come a time when a call is important or a text must be
sent, and in such cases, it is best to pull over when it is safest to
do so before carrying out the action.
Although
I’ve never had an experience of being in a car accident, I know a
few people who have, including my mother–her accident involved no
injuries and was not her fault. I have actually seen some friends or
family members drive irresponsibly while I’m in the car with them,
as is my duty as a responsible passenger, I take it upon myself to
correct their irresponsible behavior. For example, if someone is
texting, I ask them to either stop immediately or allow me to send
the text for them so they can focus on the road. If someone needs to
make a call, I offer to dial the number and hold the phone while they
speak, ensuring that they remain focused on driving rather than
talking on the phone.
Personally,
I can be a better and safer driver by disengaging and altogether
avoiding reckless behavior such as texting and drinking while driving
and ensuring my focus remains on the road and my surroundings. I can
also take the step to map out the trip to my destination ahead of
time so that I am aware of local speed limits, roads, and laws to
keep in mind once I begin driving. I can help others become safer on
the road by encouraging them to follow my example in avoiding unsafe
driving behavior and planning their trips, as well as remaining alert
at all times–if someone is tired or unfocused while driving with
passengers, I may even suggest to switch place with another licensed,
responsible, and more alert driver.
