Though
driving is one of the most common forms of transportation, it is one
of the most dangerous. According to DMVEdu.org: Driving and Traffic
School, “In America, an average of 34,000 people die each year as a
result of driving.” There is a frequent misconception that driving
is safe as long as you follow the rules of the road and do what is
deemed correct. The key concepts to driving safe are being aware of
your surroundings, following the rules of the road, and being
extremely careful with every action. Even following all of these
rules, driving is still very dangerous due to the human factor. Human
beings are not perfect and one wrong move when operating a heavy
machine, such as a car, can lead to the death of many people. This
further conducts the importance of being a safe and educated driver.
The
importance of drivers ed is crucial to reducing the number of
deaths due to car accidents and wrecks. Without drivers ed,
the dangers of driving would surge because there would be no order or
safety in the road, people would drive however they pleased and this
would increase the number of deaths. There are many steps that can be
taken in order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One
step I suggest would be increasing the length and information
included within drivers ed courses. Information like the “Know
Your Limit” charts and the math behind it should be explained so
that there is more awareness in how much is too much, no matter their
tolerance. Another step I suggest is federally requiring drivers
education for all ages in all fifty states, with the same
requirements across the board, instead of how the process is
currently set up. This would help decrease the death toll because, in
the ideal situation, everyone would receive the same education.
The
only accident I was technically a part of was when my mother was
three months pregnant with me. There had already been a wreck and she
was trying to figure out how to navigate around the flashing lights.
Another woman behind her wasn’t paying attention and rammed into my
parents car from behind. Everyone was okay, but that incident just
came to show that you’re not truly safe even if you’re being
cautious and following the rules of the road. I have seen friends
drive irresponsibly and it has even caused me to refuse to ride with
them in the car anymore.
Steps
that I can take to be better and a safer, more educated driver are to
be cautious and aware of my surroundings, never drive under emotional
circumstances, and don’t mess with my phone while driving. To help
others do the same, I can have a conversation about the subject and
make them aware of the information I have learned while researching
for this essay. In conclusion, these actions and information should
help all become better and more educated drivers.
