Safe Driving Importance

Distracted driving has had a massive impact on the lives of individuals which has resulted in fear and loss. Many of the lives lost has been due to drivers who have not been totally focused on safe driving. The world has always been encompassed with technology and the need to be connected, especially within the younger generation. Although, the older generation is not too far behind. It’s that need to stay connected and entertained that compels us to listen to our music while driving or answer that ping we hear when our phone rings or displays a message. Distracted driving comes in many disguises. It is important to discuss the various distractions during drivers ed courses as well as find ways to reiterate the message.

One type of distracted driving is phone related activities such as texting or checking social media while driving. Texting involves looking at the screen instead of focusing on the road. It also involved removing our hands from the steering wheel making us lose control of the vehicle. One way to combat phone related distractions while driving is to simply not do engage. If necessary, pull over on the road, pull into a parking lot, or simply wait until your destination is reached to check your phone. Another type of distracted driving is changing the music. Many of us are accustomed to a specific type of music while driving. I remember reading about CD changers being added to vehicles as one means of playing music without physically changing it. It was a way to cut down on all the accidents and deaths involved in distracted driving. I think it was a good idea. Today much of the music is played by phones, iPods or MP3’s. It would be a great idea to select the playlist ahead of time, before driving so that changing the music does not become an issue. Also, a passenger, if available can change the music for you. A third type of distracted driving is too well known. It involves turning around to face someone, applying makeup, or wearing headphones while driving. All these instances increase the chances of having a car accident.

When I was younger, I was involved in a car accident. My mother was driving and me and my three siblings were in the back seat. As we were passing an intersection, a car sped past the stop sign and hit our vehicle. We ended up facing the opposite traffic while the other car ended up in a ditch. Luckily, no one was hurt but my sisters and I were terrified. Until this day which has been years later, I volunteer playing the music, or texting for the driver. I also watch the driver’s speed and let them know to slow down when necessary. I may seem annoying to them, but I feel I am providing a level of safety for us all.

I think a more open approach to safe driving is necessary and effective. I remember I had to watch a video which provided enactments of real accidents that have happened involving unsafe driving. It certainly changed the way I see things and it may help in changing how others see things as well. A higher level of awareness of how many deaths and accidents involve vehicles should continue to be shared in drivers ed courses. People who have felt the hurt behind death or pain of a loved one involving vehicular accidents should share their stories so that a connection could be made on a deeper level. Hopefully we can all do our part in promoting the safety of driving.
