  • Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly?

  • What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?

It is imperative to provide driver education to new drivers in order to impart both the knowledge and skills necessary to develop good driving habits as well as to heighten an awareness of driving related fatalities. Driver’s education should not be viewed only as a means to obtain a license but as a foundation of practical knowledge about the safe operation of a motor vehicle and traffic laws. A formal driver’s education prepares drivers for situations they may encounter thereby increasing their confidence and reducing the risks associated with inexperienced driving. Driver’s education courses allow students to demonstrate and receive feedback concerning driving abilities. This serves as a platform for certified instructors to correct bad driving practices before they become habits. When such actions are identified and fixed early, a student is likely to develop safe driving habits and reduce the risk of death.

Many drivers do not consider the weight of their actions and adopt the “it won’t happen to me” mentality concerning traffic accidents and death. Furthermore, new drivers are unaware of the frequency of traffic related deaths. I have personally witnessed friends and classmates demonstrate irresponsible driving behavior, such as texting while driving and speeding, that places themselves and other motorists in harm’s way. Often, they are under the impression that “it’s just one text” or they are “only speeding because they’re late” and these isolated incidents will not have major consequences. However, this “one time” develops into a pattern if there are no immediate repercussions. Driver’s education is a vital step in eliminating this mentality.

Laws that ban the use of hand-held devices, prohibit driving under the influence, and mandate safe speeds are great first steps in reducing traffic deaths. Safe maneuvering on roads that are compromised by snow or ice is an essential skill. Proper vehicle maintenance can ensure safe vehicle operation. Appropriate adjustment of seats, mirrors, steering wheels, and lights prior to driving eliminates possible distraction while driving. Safe practices such as these reduce the risk of traffic accidents. Driver’s education is the most effective method to communicate these laws and practical skills.

I can influence others to be safer on the road and prevent deaths by educating my friends and urging them to discontinue unsafe habits. Moreover, if I feel uncomfortable with another driver, I can ask them to correct the driving behavior or remove myself from the vehicle. Personally, I can develop the habit of leaving for appointments earlier than necessary so that I won’t be tempted to speed, eliminate all potential distractors by placing my phone in a bag or out of sight, and avoid driving in undesirable weather conditions whenever possible. I have the ability to demonstrate safe driving habits and be a role model for my younger siblings as they apply for their driver’s licenses in the future. These efforts will create safer road situations and save lives.
